A. Analysis of the printed news article ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’


i. News Criteria


            The printed news article, ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’ contained the necessary elements of news such as timeliness, proximity, prominence, consequence, human interest and conflict.


Timeliness as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary refers to the occurring of events or situations at a suitable or opportune time.  Something that just happened tends to be more newsworthy than something that happened some time ago. It is the element that makes the story news NOW, as opposed to last week or next week. In fact, when you write a news story you make sure it has a news peg. The news peg is the element that you hang your story on (). ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’ had this element that is deemed to make it worthy of attention from the media and audiences as well. Timeliness is often the news peg.


Web Quest/elements of news stated that proximity refers to the nearness of a given event to your place of publication. If we are going to look at the place of ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’ article where the event happened, it was geographically far away but considering that we are e-globally connected it is just near. Furthermore, we are also involved in the story since we want to know the development of the trial and the entire happening as well. Prominence refers to the “newsworthiness” of an individual or organization. The article focused mainly to Saddam Hussein, a famous personality. He was the President of Iraq from 1979 until April 9, 2003, when he was deposed in the United States-led invasion of Iraq. This news could affect the global environment especially Hussien who is charged of genocide and crimes against humanity is concern.


The element of consequence refers simply to the importance of an event. (). The question related to the article, ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’, might be, what will be the result of the trial because Saddam did not plea, will he and the other accused be convicted?.


Human interest is something that is out of the ordinary. In the news ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’ catches the attention and interest of the people because they might wonder why Saddam did not plea. They might also be interested in whether Saddam will be convicted.

 The lead paragraph was very clear, concise and can easily grabbed the attention of the reader. However, it did not answer all the information the reader might seek, so the reader has to go on to the next paragraphs because other questions were answered there.


 Necessary statements were quoted to bring life to the story. The article’s paragraphs run one to two sentences in length only.  It was in inverted pyramid style because it included the most important information first, followed in descending order by less-important information.


iv. Visual Elements


In print, a headline is tightly associated with photos, decks, subheads, and the full body of the article, all of which can be interpreted in a single glance. Online, a much smaller amount of information will be visible in the window, and even that information is harder and more unpleasant to read, so people often don’t do so. (1998)


However, in the article, ‘No Saddam plea at genocide trial’ there was no photograph of trial neither from Saddam Hussien and the suspects. The headline also was not stressed out because the font size was small and the font style was just ordinary.


B. Analysis of the printed news article, ‘Australia seeks action over Bali’


i. News Criteria


It is timely because the event occurred at a suitable time involving two nations, the Australia and Indonesia. Just like the first article, it has a news peg. The main aspect of this article with has to do with the ‘timely element’ is terrorism attack and terrorism activities.


It is proximate because whatever happens to the action and procedure seek by Australia from Indonesia with regards to Bali bombing, it could greatly affect to the relationship of two countries. In the end, it is the global economy that will suffer.


It has a conflict because of the idea that why Australia seek action from Indonesia over Bali bombing wherein Bali does not belong to the territory of Australia. It is suppose the duty of the Indonesian government to solve this problem.


The human interest element falls in question, what will the action of the two nations regarding the issue. Will it lead to a gap between them and in the end to a war?


ii. Communication Quality


All W’s and H were present in the article. The first paragraph can be name as lead paragraph because it answered the question what. On the other hand, the question of when even it is not stated or put it the article is already understood that it refers to the present time.


iii. Quality of Construction


 The lead paragraph is interesting with obvious attempt to pull reader into the story. Although it is sketchy, the report contains 5 W’s / H of news reporting. Moreover, it is developed through use of specific, interesting details and quoted statements. The supporting details and the last two paragraphs obviously tied to lead. It provided a good end for the report.


iv. Visual Elements


There was no photograph included in the news report. The headline was given emphasized thru the used of small font size and ordinary font style.


C. Analysis of the printed news article, ‘Materazzi reveals details of Cup exchange with Zidane’


i. News Criteria


It has the elements of prominence, human interest, conflict and timeliness.


-Marco Materozzi and Zinedine Zidane are two famous individual in the world of football.


It has human interest because it depicts a war between a football player and a retired football player.


It has a conflict because the two individual had a bad verbal exchange. It is timely because it just happened yesterday.


ii. Communication Quality


The news report included complete information about the 5 W’s and H of news reporting.


iii. Quality of Construction


The story was well-organized with clear evidence of a transition/quote format used throughout.


iv. Visual Elements


There was no photograph included. But the headline was emphasized because it had a kicker, the font size were large and the font style bolded.


D. Analysis of the printed news article, ‘Student convicted in Sydney with murder of Singaporean flatmates’


i. News Criteria


It was already not timely because it happened last September 15, 2003. However, it had conflict because of the murder and a human interest because it involved an issue about man versus man.


ii. Communication Quality


It included complete information about the 5 W’s and H of news reporting.


iii. Quality of Communication


The lead is interesting. It uses quote format for the majority of point.


iv. Visual Elements


The article has no photograph. The title is given stressed out.


E. Analysis of the article, ‘Klimt portrait sells for a record 5 million’


i. News Criteria


It has human interest. We can’t imagine that portrait can be sold for million.


ii. Communication Quality


The article provided all the necessary information that could answer the questions of the readers.


iii. Quality of Construction


The report was constructed properly. The lead paragraph was catchy. Quoted statements strengthen the entire article.


iv. Visual Elements


There was no photo of the portrait. But the writer was acknowledged and the date was included. The headline was bolded, thus, emphasizing it.


F. Analysis of the article, The Electric New Paper Singapore’


i. News Criteria


It had human interest because it could raise the eyebrows of people. Cleaning, painting, planning and planting of Singapore to ensure everything down to the last detail is perfect was not ordinary.


It also had prominence because Singapore is a well known country.


ii. Communication Quality


Just like the other articles, it had all the information the readers might ask. It included complete information about the 5 W’s and H of news reporting.


iii. Quality of Construction


The story was well organized and constructed.


iv. Visual Elements


The article was very different form the rest because it had photographs that showed what really took place in the story. This gave the reader a sort of ideas about Singapore after the event.

The broadcast clip was about the interview of Miles O’ Brien, CNN reporter to Brigitte Gabrille, a Lebanese woman, a survivor of Islamic terror worn Amrerica,born in Lebanon now an American citizen and author of soon to publish book ‘Because They Hate’. Brigitte related the crisis in the Middle East from her experiences in Lebanon when she was 10 years old; the bombing of their home, when she was sent to hospital, living without electricity and other happenings brought by war. She mentioned that they really wanted peace but the radicals insisted killing Christians and fighting Israel. According to her, Hezbollah did not want peace with Israel nor with America nor with western civilization. She stressed that Israel was the one that have to be supported.


Analysis:


i. Use of broadcast language in the story\report


The host and the interviewee really know what the topic was about.  Their statements were clearly delivered. Appropriate words were also used understandable by the average audience.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


 The flashing of the book on the screen written by the interviewee gave her an advanced introduction. Also, her statement was stressed out when it was flashed on the screen while the interviewer read it. The interviewee was credible enough to be interviewed because she had enough knowledge regarding the Crisis in the Middle East since she was a born in Lebanon and she was speaking from her experiences. Moreover, since there were some situations regarding crisis in Middle East that were flashed on the screen, the topic was given emphasis.


iii. Clarity of Communication


The flow of communication was very clear. The audience can easily understand what the two individual was dealing about. Questions were properly raised responded by the appropriate answers.           


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


The video and the statements flashed on the screen and the back up sounds gave more life on the broadcast story. Furthermore, it enhanced the delivery of the story.

The clip was about the discussion about Jon Benet Ramsey murder case investigation. Four people were invited to participate in the panel discussion: Jeralyn Merritt, criminal defense attorney; Bill Fallon, FMR prosecutor; Pam Bondi, Florida prosecutor and Lisa Bloom, court TV.


i. Use of broadcast language in the story\report


Statements of the panel members were very clear. All of them were really involve in the case so all have enough knowledge. They also knew what they were talking about.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


More videos related to the investigations were flashed on the screen. Audience can feel the drama behind that scene. Credible persons were invited to participate in the discussion.


iii. Clarity of Communication


The start of the clip was not clear but on the succeeding part it wasn’t.  The member of the panel but- in to correct the wrong interviewer’s statement. But the over –all flow of communication was okay.


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


Since there were more pictures and video relating to the victim and to the investigation process, the audience can relate to the happening. The report was emphasized.

The clip was the death of Irwin Steve, Australian crocodile hunter, famous for handling poisonous creatures.  He was stung in chest by sting ray barb. Cathie Schnitzerling, Australia Channel 10 news director of channel was interviewed by a CNN reporter to get her reaction about the sad event.

The broadcast language used was clear. Like the previous clips, it can be easily understood. We can feel the sad emotion of the reporter and the interviewee because of their tone intonation.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


The audience can have the idea about Irwin and the nature of his work because of the photo flashed in the screen. It was more dramatic if the interviewee was members of family of Irwin to really witness the drama on that scene.


iii. Clarity of Communication


Like the previous clips, communication flow was very clear.


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


The over-exposure of the same photos of the subject can irritate the audience’s eyes. It was better if the photos flashed on the screen were not repeated.

It was about the new service of mobile phone technology, the location based service. You can now locate where the nearest atm machines, the nearest restaurants etc.

The broadcast language was clear and effective. It can be easily understood.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


Interviewing person with great knowledge on mobile industry gave more credibility to the worthiness of the report. Voice-over style while flashing on the screen the necessary photos was good to present the report.


iii. Clarity of Communication


It was very clear.


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


Like the other clips, the photo gave enhance more the content of the report. Audience will not get bored while viewing the story.

The clip was about the tsunami in Indonesia. It was one of the catastrophes of the modern time.

It was very effective and clear.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


We can really feel the drama and the tragedy on this report thru the actual footage that was shown. And this was very effective to get the emotion of the audience.


iii. Clarity of Communication


It had the ABC element.  This clip was the best among the other previous clips.


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


The audience can really feel the drama. They can witness by their own eyes the devastation happen. The video of tsunami shown gave total impact on the story.

It was about the big foot found in the ring forest of Malaysia. Investigators believed that it was a clear foot print of the country’s own big foot. Paranormal experts were invited to study the phenomenon. They believed that an adult big foot can reach the height of 3 1 meters and weigh more than 200 kilograms.

Language was effective except that the reporter seemed to have difficulty reporting in English.


ii. Inclusion and Effectiveness of Actuality Materials


Materials shown and interviews added more spice to the report.


iii. Clarity of Communication


The communication flow was okay except that the reporter seemed to have difficulty reporting in English which I mentioned ago.


iv. Value of Pictures and Sounds in Enhancing the Content


The photos gave the idea of what the subject about. It developed well the content of the story.
