HOTEL RISK MANAGEMENT


 


      Managing a hotel and restaurant is a glamorous and exciting business it’s also pleasurable and maybe we can say that it is an easy job because it may include luxury and comfort of facilities that is within reach, maintaining a hotel business doesn’t really require so much expertise though it is very costly and may take years to take the return of investment but all in all it’s a good business of choice if you have the resources. Managing a hotel just like any other business also involved risk and no matter where it is established there will be untoward incidents that may arise and management must be ready to deal with it. Often times the following problems may be met;   


      Theft or robbery from unexpected guess or employees, and this can cause a panic from the hotel in general if there are unusual incidents that happen like this one, employees may be tempted to get some of the equipment of their hotel while some guest deliberately plans to rob the hotel. Therefore security personnel must always be on guard to facilitate the incidents, the CCTV or closed circuit television must be placed securely and maintained so as to trace the history of the incident. Another thing is that employees must also be trained or learn to prepare any form of self defense against this people.


      The fire exit is another facility that should not be taken for granted the government have been requiring such facility in most institution including all buildings as a safety net. This helps people to escape from immediate needs because of any untoward incidents such as fire, earthquake, explosion etc. institution who do not comply with the construction of this facilities may be illegal or discouraging to their customers since they do not ensure and practice safety which is assigned by law. Sometimes management simply ignore such law simply to save construction cost or simply relying on insurance benefit if some incidence will rise but somehow in the long run they will be the one to suffer the consequence of their negligence.


      Electrical safety of installation, this is another risk management factor that should not be disregarded. Many new guest especially children will definitely take us of the equipment and appliances inside the hotel and they may be prone to carelessness while using it. Electronic gadgets needs electricity that is safe and reliable in time of use, open wire or wet installation that may cause electric shock to people should be a standard measures to be taken off. There should be maintenance in electrical installation so as no electrical short circuit or electrical hazards will ever happen. Unsafe electrical installation may also be the cause of explosion or fire.


      Management may also take part of the cleanliness and orderliness of its surroundings and the environment. Their waste must be properly dispose and maintain in high standard, it is definitely a disgrace for a hotel to see it halfway cluttered and unclean, personnel needs to practice this standard in maintaining a safe and healthy environment every time. Including sanitized water, clean room and fresh air must be maintained for the comfort of their customers.


      There are many things that needs maintenance especially in the large four or five star hotels and all this involve low to medium risk if not prevented, management must be aware of the following; improved security, supplies availability, first aid availability, smoking area, swimming pool and even children’s playground for safety, cleanliness of equipment for the guess etc. All this things and more add up to the quality and value that can make customer want to return if they are pleased and satisfied. Sometimes they will probably be the one to refer customers in your hotel. 


      One of the most significant risk that a hotel may not be given much importance is the underlying factor that this are taken into consideration as a management function and not a risk at all is the customer service of their employees. The effective customer service of all employees will definitely add up to the risk factor when customers may be satisfied with their facilities but not in the availability of services of their employees. Therefore all employees must be highly trained to serve their customers respectfully and with full knowledge about their service.    


      When all risk factor has all been figured out and the facilities has all been inspected it is time to promote the business, a well presented advertisement, magazine exposure or media release should goes well to their customers but there are also a little risk involve in promoting a hotel business considering the price and economical value and competition that they can get, to settle this risk they must promote the business honestly about their services and facilities they can offer. In this effect customers can rest assured that they get more than what they paid for.
