What is the Goal of University Education, a Good Career or a Good Character?

Generally, higher education is very important to many students at this time and age not only for molding their character of behavior but most importantly is to earn a degree.  Having finished a college degree will certainly help the students to be equipped with basic knowledge and skills for any job in the various industries.  Relatively, a good education is a real treasure that no one can ever steal from anybody.  This is a very effective weapon in surviving various challenges that may occur in the journey of a person towards seeking for a stable and promising job career in the future.  On the other hand, good character is equally important as to having a good career; because it is very impossible for a person to have a good and stable career if he/she does not know how to carry himself/herself well in front of other people.  Many successful professionals say that skills can be learned and honed but unpleasant character cannot be changed and improved as the person grows older.  So, it only means that both of them are important; that is the primary reason that molding a good character is the very first thing that the preschool educators teach to children.  Eventually, as the students go to higher level of education, teaching moral values and proper attitude and behavior are always at the prime of the teaching principles of the teachers and professors.

Furthermore, these two factors are the main determiners on the success and failures of any individual upon finishing college.  There are students who take courses in college which they really do not like.  While there are number of students who take courses that align with their core interest. Based on the study, these people will have likely  become successful and  productive in their chosen career someday.  This aspect is very crucial in the outcome of the career of a person; because if   the person is effectively motivated,  if he/she really loves what he/she does.  It makes the person be inspired of the thought that he will be the person that he wants to become someday and not the person that he never dreamt to be.  In other words, there are many students these days who are only forced to take courses which they never liked.  They are only forced by their parents to take such courses for various reasons.  Other students are taking degrees that only suit to the general weighted average that they got from their secondary education.  While others, only take associate courses because they never passed in the entrance exam; and many more reasons why a most wanted degree is usually not taken by a college student.  Otherwise, many students are having difficulties with the courses they really want to take in college.

On the other hand, the real purpose of acquiring good education is already overlooked today by many educators and students.  There are many aspects in the contemporary education that are only being taken for granted by many concerned individuals in the field of education.  As a matter of fact, various philosophies and moral principles are not properly implemented and promoted by many universities worldwide these days.  Aside from that, irrelevance fragmentation of knowledge is very critical part among students. Currently, diversified information from different volumes of books have been read by the students, but, the question is, do they really understand the concept of reading and  getting information from the concept of getting comprehension and understanding of what they a have  read?

Moreover, the standard of learning nowadays in the universities is going down, since the time that many government schools started to accommodate huge number of students.  This educational system in the public universities lead a less effective teaching approach and strategies towards a better learning process among the university students in many countries.  It is very obvious, that if a student is studying in a prestigious school, all  the world class  modern facilities and innovative  teaching mechanisms are readily provided for them.  In contrast, there are public university students who have not been given chances to use modern and well equipped learning facilities for a more effective learning process.  Additionally, increase in the tuition fees is one of the main causes of low quality of learning among university students in each country.  In the same fashion the high expectations of the parents from their children is a pressure factor on the students to enter in the university.  .  Consequently, many students who come from poor families do not have chances to earn any degree in the university because of the financial incapacity of the parents to support their studies.
