STRESS AND ETHICS MANAGEMENT AND EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY

Realizing that one is in charge of one’s life is the basis of stress management. It is all about being in control of one’s emotions, thoughts, behavior, schedule and the surrounding environment. It is all about how one perceives a problem situation. Stress management, if attained, can bring about a balanced life, the  spirit to take on life’s challenges, and the resistance to be brought down by pressure.

Stress management begins with recognizing the origin of the stress. A worker who is constantly stressed in meeting deadlines should take the time to do some introspection regarding his attitude, behavior and  justifications. It might be that the worker has a habit of procrastination, or is disorderly and unorganized in the execution of his tasks that deadlines are constantly in danger of not being met.

Until such time that a worker accepts his role in the creation of stress, management of stress will always be elusive.  Change is required to cope and control factors bringing stress.   Change applies to both change in situation and change in perspective and reaction. There are four tips to help control stress-giving variables. These are avoid, adapt, alter and/or accept.

To attain the company’s goal of surplus profit, the organization must promote an environment where employees can be productive. Too much stress on a worker can also affect the organization through absenteeism, tardiness, accidents during work hours, employee turnover and faulty decision making.

As stress has a context that is negative, so it also has a context that is positive. Some employees employ stress positively to meet challenges and perform to their optimal level.

Low and medium level of stress are usually those kind of stress that propels a worker to give their best. It is those high levels and very low levels of stress that are continuously prolonged that need looking into by management as this brings about a reduction in employee performance.  Continuous high levels of stress can sometimes cause absenteeism due to illnesses, mistakes, and even errant or erratic behavior that will affect the workers performance as well as of the group. Continuous low levels of stress imply that the employee might have become apathetic to the aims of the department or the organization, or the worker is already bored and uninterested in his job.

The company may do the following to counter employee stress. They might make recreational and counseling facilities available to all employees or they might try complementing the employee with the right job. These two counter measures will definitely bring about an increase in productivity that will bring positive results both to the employee and the company.

In Ethics management, the primary goal of management is to  act and behave toward all members of the organization in a just and moral way.  If management follows the organization’s ethics, employees are motivated too to act in an ethical way. Since doing the job correctly and on-time is considered a work ethic, then it follows that employee productivity results.

Ethics management is adhering to regulations, laws and policies, competing with competitors in a fair way, and doing their duties cleanly and honestly. Conventional businesses have written codes of conduct that all employees must follow. Included in this code of conduct is the penalty to be incurred if the employee fails to follow the guidelines.

A study has observed that there is a strong connection between employee commitment and ethical culture. An employee works better and stays longer in a company where there is a presence of a strong culture of ethics.  This information  gives it a nine percent increase in productivity which is quite a striking outcome.

To secure commitment of employees, companies should guarantee ethical behavior within the company. Management should set the example by reinforcing the values of the company.  The company must ensure that all its leaders are able to impart the message of ethical priorities and apply them in their daily undertakings.

It is observed that every decision has an ethical issue involved. In setting an example, management  encourages others to live and work according to the ethics set by the company.
