Counseling Case Study

Counseling Conflict is a recurring theme for our society, how might you use counseling skills to deal with this issue. Describe two different models of counseling, their similarities and differences and how you might use them in your work or with others in a helping relationship.               Conflicts can bring burden, leading to pain and a depth of confusion. Further, conflict can affect the morale and drive or motivation of an individual. Conflicts related to relationships also affect the self-esteem and self-perception of the person(s) involved. There emerge other conflicts such as feeling of isolation and slow departure from life. As such, conflicts therefore require intervention and one of which is counseling that is performed by a specialist.             Personal counseling interventions are led by and negotiated with individuals with specific needs, and is conducted on a one-to-one basis. The strong point of this is its flexibility as either to promote positive health and well-being or to prevent emotional disruptions through proper management. Basically, as the intervention is dependent on social and economic issues, this may create barriers to change. The limitation is the ability of individuals to sustain such changes when faced with issues that are beyond an individual’s control.             Counseling employed should address a variety of personal/individual and/or relational issues. During counseling, individual inputs are permitted during the evaluation process, revealing factors that influence that current state of mind and emotion of the individual. With this, counseling requires a sound therapeutic alliance wherein the therapeutic relationship could possibly lead to sound behavior changes. Because it is basically a counseling situation, competence, warmth and empathy must be present on the side of the therapist. In this way also, collaboration and active participation could be emphasized.               When faced with conflicts, am individual develops irritation, moodiness, exaggerated emotions, fear and loss of confidence. Further, the individual also tends to make his/her own cognitive judgment of the situation despite confusion, inability to concentrate, remember or make decisions which may in turn worsen the conflict resolving process through counseling.             Two models relating to counseling are psychoanalytic and relational models. Psychoanalytic model refers to the psychological strategies that were brought into play via different entities that purports on coping with reality and maintaining self-image. Such a model helps individuals overcome and change dysfunctional thinking and behavior as well as emotional responses. Thereby, this model helps individuals to stop the pattern of negative thoughts like that of conflicts and thoughts of it may not be resolved at all.             Same with relational model, psychoanalytic model tend be goal oriented and problem focused. Relational model, since it focuses on dependency with others as well as on public and private selves, is central on assessing relationships as a factor that influences emotions and behaviors unique to an individual. As conflicts may overwhelm one’s ability to respond adequately, the role of families and the immediate community in the recovery of that individual is also taken into consideration in this model.             Psychoanalytic model can be used in such a way that it can represent thoughts about conflict in a different light, reorganizing the thoughts of an individual. Although individuals are capable of thinking reasonably, in the light of conflicts, thoughts tend to be distorted or are becoming unreasonably negative. Eventually, such thoughts affect the ability of the individual to process clearly and adequately. When this scenario emerges, relational model can be used.             As such, relational model can be used to reorganize emotional responses through a strong social support system. Social support enables the adaption of necessary appropriate behaviors in dealing with conflicts, highlighting the coping responses of the individual. Positive social support improves personal well-being and social existence of the individual facing conflict in such a way that negative thoughts are made less effective, efficient and relevant while making desired thoughts more functional.
