Manangement Issues Sanmina-SCI

Management Issues Management Issues: Sanmina-SCI   Company Description               Based in San Jose, California, Sanmina-SCI provides Electronics Manufacturing Services particularly in the “delivering complete end-to-end manufacturing capabilities and highly complex solutions to technology companies around the world” (Sanmina-SCI, 2006) It boasts manufacturing facilities and operation in over 20 countries around the world.  I chose this organization as I have personal working experience in this company.   Management Issue   Current issues in management involve the relationship of managers with the workforce inclusive of which are issues on handling diversity, unions, human resource management and self-directed work teams.                The focus of this paper is Human resource management, particularly the concept of Redundancies as applied in the case of Sanmina-SCI.                Redundancies is said to be the dismissal of employment as a means to rationalize the cutting down of costs or an employer suffering in his/her business that would require relocation.  It is a touchy subject that must be dealt with care.  Employers in their part must not only offer explanations, be fair in the choosing of redundant people but they must also express their utmost regret and at the same time, gratitude to the unfortunate worker (Harriott, 2002).    Redundancy should be ended with a sense of respect and justice.  Most often than not, redundancy is performed with a lack of consideration in the employees’ part.  This is because a Redundancy may not sound as unfortunate as it seems and employers end up appearing as “executioners”.  In order to save the company, the employees must be sacrificed in its expense.  Employees will tend to feel undervalued and be generally resentful of such a decision (Harriot, 2002, p. 15).           This has been the case of the mass lay-off of 300 employees in Sanmina-SCI’s Greenock,Scotland plant during the 2005 Christmas break.  This is brought by external factors related to the location of the plant, Scotland itself.  Sanmina-SCI has been cutting down expenses through transferring production overseas such as in Eastern Europe and China.    The Scotsman reports that the workers (originally 650) were formerly from IBM who moved to Sanmina thanks to an outsourcing deal.  When it was IBM that decided to move out of production, it was Sanmina that received these laid off workers.  This time around however, it was Sanmina’s turn to tighten their belts by laying-off these workers due production location change.  It has been having a history of laying off workers from December 2003 when it removed 250 workers as they moved production to Hungary.  A year before this, Sanmina has closed down its Ayrshire factory that led up to 400 jobs lost due to the factory closing.  Thus, the shutting down of its Scot based factory is not a first incident, and is in fact, only one of already several movements of laying-off hundreds of jobs due to location costs.  This is another reaction of a seemingly diminishing electronic industry and the globalization phenomena.  Low production costs due to cheap data processors are said to be the main reasons why jobs had been primarily laid off (Marland, 2006).               Richard Ball (2006) had also reported than Sanmina’s revenues had begun declining from .2 billion in the year 2004 to .7 billion in the year 2005.  Its net loss similarly increased drastically in this regard as its net loss of 11 million dollars in 2004 had rose alarmingly to 996 million dollars in the year 2005.                   Sanmina has been receiving several criticisms because of their layoffs and repeated claim of redundancies deeming the company to be insensitive to the workers and their family, heightened by the circumstance that the lay off was performed during the Festive season.  Also Sanmina’s management was also criticized as disappointing and incapable of looking due to the fact that the plant was only about to reach its first year.  Sanmina was said to be falsely optimistic about the plant and that the employment has suffered tremendous damages due to Sanmina.                  Congressman John F Tierney (2004) also pointed out how the laid off workers of Sanmina are top skilled and loyal employees of Sanmina spanning for over 20 years.  They have experience and at the same time loyalty to the corporation but their employment will have to be compromised in favor of cheaper production costs elsewhere.  The concerns of these laid off workers is the difficulty to be supplemented with another job.                In the year 2005, laid-off Sanmina workers had arranged for a employment tribunal that will put Sanmina in a compromising position due to claims of mass redundancies.  According to the Greenock Telegraph, these workers were rewarded £150,000 to compensate for their removal.  The former employees were fervent in their belief that they were maltreated and poorly dismissed (Greenock Telegraph, 2005).                Other criticisms concern Sanmina’s inability to foresee the mass layoff which would have been perceived earlier on.   Despite Sanmina’s defense that it has been due to expensive labor costs and industry downturn, critics and employees would see the act as motivated by nothing more than taking advantage of the situation.  According to Anthony Clark (2002) Sanmina is merely taking advantage of the circumstances of outsourced employees.  The complaint of British workforce is mainly that they do not have sufficient protection against redundancies unlike the other workforce.             Sanmina-SCI intended a 90-day closing period.  As the issue is still freshly released, there is still much that may develop about this matter.  Sanmina-SCI is a classic example of a company suffering under economic downturns and must make the decision to shut down production in costly areas and lay off all its workers.  Whether or not Sanmina-SCI is able to be fair and concerned of its employees remains to be seen.  Sanmina-SCI has had a record of displeased and dissatisfied laid off workers.  It remains a question whether Sanmina-SCI has truly considered the circumstances and situations of these workers, put them in the context of their country’s laws and at the same time, protected and looked after their welfare such that employers need to do.  This case only emphasizes how Redundancy is a tricky situation and would require the extra efforts of the employer to truly attempt to end the lay off in a manner that is with fairness and respect.  By laying off hundreds of workers puts Sanmina-SCI in an immediately disadvantageous position especially if this is performed in the beginning of the year.  It has indeed the heavy burden of going out of its way (rather evading the employees and treating the issue as strictly professional and formal) to ensure that the redundancy is performed not in the electoral tribunal as reported earlier.  Sanmina-SCI must take extra note that some of the workers it sacked have already been with them since IBM transferred the employees to their care.  Most of them would have taken years in the computer company and have consequently gone old.  They and their families need their own special compensation.   Continuous dialogue in the part of the management themselves is essential in order to appease and support the dismayed employees Credit:ivythesis.typepad.com

Management of a Firm

Introduction Management of a firm needs strategy, to make sure that everything goes well in the company, through the use of strategic management everything done in the company is well organized and no detail is being left out. The company needs strategic management to make sure that the company is doing well internally. The term strategic management originates from the Greek language. The person who makes strategies is the strategist who is the leader of an army (Mintzberg & Quinn 1991).Strategic management decisions have multi-functional and multi-business consequences, this kind of decision require broad consideration of the firm’s external and internal environments, and it may affect the firm’s chance of prosperity.   The strategic management paradigm is built on the notion that strategic decision making results from intentional actions in the name of individual or collective purpose. The paradigm accords central importance to the cognitive elements of understanding and intention as basic drivers of strategic choice. Strategy is plagued by a stigma of unsystematic reasoning (1988). Strategy is a combination of the company’s objectives, policies and decisions to be done in unison or contingent upon each other. Marketing strategy thus refers to how a company’s products or services its trade is presented to consumers in an effective manner as to gain loyal costumers. Strategy can be used in different ways, one of which is through marketing. Using strategy in marketing makes it more convincing and effective. Strategy makes sure that nothing wrong happens in the marketing process in the company.   Hotels are commercial establishment that provides lodging, food, and other services to the public. The hotel business is an important industry in many countries, especially in those attracting a large tourist trade. Hotels can be classified according to location, facilities and services offered, and clientele served. The transient hotel is usually located within city boundaries and caters to people traveling for business or pleasure. Motor hotels or motels cater to the same group of persons, but are often situated near or along major highways. Both hotels and motels provide numerous amenities in addition to sleeping accommodations, including maid service, radio and television, parking space for automobiles, recreational facilities, food and beverage services, and retail shops. Conventions are the most important source of income for some hotels and motels. In the U.S., for example, it is estimated that some 10 million people attend conventions each year (1997).   The hotel industry for years was relatively complacent. The demand for hotel rooms generally exceeded the supply. Management was confronted with the problem that hotels cannot be easily remodeled to satisfy customers’ changing needs and that a product differentiation strategy was needed to make an individual hotel distinctive from the others. Many hotels had similar facilities and offered comparable services. To meet these challenges, a strategy of lifestyle market segmentation was employed (1995). Hotels carefully try to match the service offering with the desired target market. Service tangibility can be increased by emphasizing service-provider reliability. Efforts must be made to offer similar services to market segments with different demand patterns. Although hotels endeavor to standardize services, there is the danger that while these services may have more consistent quality and convenience, the personal touch may be lacking (1995).  The paper will provide an evaluation of the strategic environment of the company. The paper will also discuss the company’s process of strategy formulation.   Evaluation of the strategic environment SWOT analysis Strength Strengths are the strong points of the business. To know the strengths of the things that should be known includes the sources of the company’s revenue, the market share of the company in various product lines, the availability of strong brands of a company, the effectiveness of the advertisement of the brand or product, the availability of pool of skilled workers, the morale of the employees,   the innovativeness of the company and the ability of the company to withstood international competition. A strength of the company is its continuous and fast growth as the years pass. This gives them a distinct advantage towards their competitors. This also gives the company a distinct identity separate from its competitors. The continuous and fast growth of the company shows how well they are operating and how effective their strategy.   Another strength of the company is the employees of the company being trained well. The employees of the company are well trained. The employees were well chosen and well trained to do their respective jobs. These employees are well managed to keep them in line with the objectives and standards of the company. This is strength of a company because it brings out the best employees thus the best service can be given to the clients. If clients enjoy the service of the company they tend to return to avail again the services and products offered by the company this results to satisfaction of the goals of the company. Lastly a strength of Took Inn is the use of a website which serves as a reservation system for clients. The company’s website helps in giving clients ease in reserving a room they will use for their stay in the country. The website saves the clients some time in knowing if there are rooms available and if they can afford the use of such room.   Weakness Weaknesses are the current problems of the company. To determine the weakness of the company the things that should be known includes the products that are least profitable, areas of the company that is not able to recover cost, the weak brands, the ability of the company to raise money when it needs to, the ability of the company to stand price pressures against competitors, the ability of the company to create new ideas, the faith of employees in management and the ability to compete with other companies in the technology front. A weakness of the company is the low number of occupancy during weekends. This shows how inconsistent the company is in regards to attracting clients to avail of their services. The low level of occupancy can be because of better offers by other company or their consistent kind of service. A weakness of Took Inn is it not having an attractable website.   Having an attractable website makes client view the website and purchase the product or service they need. It increases the clients of the company and makes the client suggest it to people they know. Lastly the company’s weakness includes the lack of promotional advertisements. The company although has a strong brand name is lacking of promotional programs. The company maybe popular to those who have seen it in the internet, have availed of their services, or have come to know of the company through its other clients but to some people the company is not that known. The company needs an effective promotional advertisement that can give the company more clients.   Opportunities Opportunities are those events or situations that may arise in the future. To determine the opportunities of the company the things that should be known includes competitive position of the company, new technologies that the company can innovate for low costs, the capacity and opportunity to extend brands, the capacity to implement incentive plans to boost employee effectiveness, the ability of the company to move up the value chain, the ability of employees to be multi-skilled to reduce levels of redundancy, opportunities to cooperate with companies that are not competitors for both companies to be beneficial. An opportunity the company has is the website it has. The company can make the website more user-friendly, helpful and informative so that people will be encouraged to use it. The web can also be used as a promotional material that the company can use for more people to know the company.   Another opportunity for the company is its wide range of products and services it offers. They can use such products and services to satisfy the needs of the clients and offer these clients everything they need. This can also be used to increase the status of the company against its competitors. Lastly an opportunity for the company is the internet constantly being improved to suit the lifestyle of the people. Through the constant innovations made regarding the internet the company can increase the clients they have at the same time their profits will also increase.   Threat Threats are problems that may arise and should be avoided. To determine the threats of the company the things that should be known includes the capacity of employees to be adequately trained, the capacity of the company to withstand sudden changes in the environment, the ability of the brands to withstand price competition, the financial being on the verge of liquidity, is the company considered a good employer, and the ability of the company to cope up with technological changes. A threat to the company is its competitors. The competitors they have might find a way to equal or exceed the performance of the company in the future. This could cause them problems or major hindrances to achieve their goals. Another threat to the company includes the laws in the country they are operating in. Laws are a vital part of a country. These laws are the ones that initiate order and discipline in the country. There may be laws that can cause some delay in selling the products. These laws can hamper business transactions to be completed. These laws are enacted to protect the welfare of local sellers in that specific country.  Since there are different laws in different countries it can also cause problems for the company.   A threat to the company is its low sales during weekends. The low sales during weekends may make perspective clients move away from the company. Low sales give the company a bad image to the clients and it increases the competitor’s advantage towards the company. Lastly a threat to the company is the tariffs and taxes that the company has in different countries, each countries has its own rate of taxes and tariff. Taxes and tariffs are collected by the countries government as additional funds for their projects in that country. The taxes and tariffs collected by a country depend on what the law of the country states. The taxes and tariffs collected by a country is a threat because this causes expenditures to a company. Since its rate varies the company must be wary of the cost of the taxes and tariffs and be able to decide if having a business in that particularly country is reasonable and feasible for the company.      Strategy formulation Strategy formulation is one very important element of the Comprehensive commercial planning (CP) discipline, but certainly no more important than the others. Comprehensive planning requires management to evaluate internal and environmental business conditions, to select from alternative goals and strategies, to decide how strategy best can be implemented, and to perform these functions continuously. This is hard work; there are no shortcuts. Strategic insight in the abstract, no matter how brilliant, does not satisfy any standard for good planning or a good plan Strategy must be appropriate for prevailing and potential business conditions, as well as for an enterprise’s goals and capabilities. Reliable implementation of strategy also must be feasible. When business conditions change, strategy must change (2004).  Perpetual re planning is essential, because no plan remains viable for very long. Indeed, any single plan of business that is not modified from time to time and implemented long enough probably will lead to a firm’s eventual failure, simply because internal and external business conditions change continually (2004).  In its process of strategy formulation the company initially thinks about the things to be done to achieve its objectives. Afterwards the company considers its environment and creates environment strategies that it believes can help in achieving its objectives without causing problems to its environment. The Classifications of Risks facing Palm, Inc.

Introduction             Risk management is a task similar to the other management functions such as marketing, purchasing or finance. Thus, if we look at economic development from a functional viewpoint risk management is somewhat every countries do which directs to the realisation of its overall economic objectives. The scenery of risk management shall be scrutinized first pursued by an argument on this research which focuses on the risk management of Palm, Inc. Risk is everywhere. It is not hard to find risk. In almost every thing that we do and situations we face, there is a corresponding risk behind it. However, we cannot just run from it. All we can do to move forward is to manage this risk, or if not, at least lessen the risk involve. We can never tell what will happen unless we try to overcome it. Whether we like it or not, the world is such an unpredictable place. Moreover, as long as future uncertainties exist, which might cause adverse effects for individuals, the world remains to be a place in which risk must be managed. Overview of Risk Management             Risk management started out as an indemnity management purpose. The cost of indemnity had restricted management’s alternatives in dealing with the hazards faced by the organisation. One of the foremost problems was that insurers rated firms according to business in such a way that a fine run firm that had few losses were required to pay for the claims of poorly run firms within the same industry. With this, the role of risk management appeared. Management began to make out that abridged losses intended reduced cost of risk. If risk managers reduced losses they could hold them themselves without resorting to indemnity. However, it took some time for industries to settle in risk management. The delicate inquisitiveness in risk management is the result of a number of instantaneous drifts. Globalisation of trade and production has augmented financial and direct investment in unstable up-and-coming markets. Risk management has also ensnared consideration as a result of the recurring and well-publicised breakdowns linked with its execution. Regardless of the amplified academic and specialized concentration paid to risk management, common instances still occur when classy investors or firms experience abrupt, unexpected, and devastating losses. To an economist, risk is described as the survival of ambiguity about potential upshots. Risk is a mean reason in economic existence for the reason that individuals and firms create immutable reserves in research and product improvement, inventory, plant and equipment and human capital, without knowing whether the potential cash flows from these funds will be adequate to pay off both debt and equity holders. If such genuine investments do not engender their necessary returns, then the financial claims on these returns will turn down in worth. In addition to altering the extent of equity and debt in their capital composition, firms/business organisations can also influence their chance of liquidation by extenuating the risk disclosures they countenance. Firms/Business organisations come out to prefer between the types and degrees of disclosures, assuming those that they consider have an aggressive gain in supervision and laying others off into the capital markets. Other features of the firm’s processes such as the convexity of its tax lists, can also influence the amount to which administrators challenge to alleviate risks. Apparently, Besanko, Dranove and Shanley, (1996) believes that economists and strategic planners view risk management as being related to the issue of the boundaries of the firm. In this structure, the pronouncement to alleviate meticulous risks is comparable to the verdict to outsource a particular purpose. Thus, risk management, like technology, allocation, or level, is a basis of economical plus. Classifications of Risks facing Palm, Inc.             Risk is defined as any source of randomness that may adversely affect a person or corporation. In connection with this, risk management is the reaction to such risk by individuals or businesses as they attempt to make sure that the risks in which they are exposed to are the risks in which they think they are actually being exposed to and want to be exposed (Culp, 2001). Market Risk             Market risk within Palm, Inc. arises from the event of a change in some market-determined asset price, reference rate, or index. The said events define market risk further into two categories. The first event-type defines market risk based on the asset class type whose price changes impact the exposure in question. One common form of asset class-based market risk is the risk on interest rate, or risk that the balance sheet assets, liabilities, and off-balance sheet items of the firm (including its derivatives) will change in value as interest rates change. Other asset class-driven classifications of market risk include the changes in the value of an exposure attributable to exchange rates’ fluctuations, commodity prices, and values of equity.             Risk factors are any market-determined price, rate, or index value that impacts the flow of cash of an exposure. The discount rate comes into play when we are talking of the asset’s present value, although convention does not classify it as a risk factor. It is also typically improper to decompose risk factors into the non-traded exposures that may underlie them (Elliott, 2002).             Aside from the risk factors that influence the exposure value, the market risk of an exposure is also characterized on the basis of the way these risk factors impact its value. In this case, market risk is classified by the use of fraternity row (colorful argot). Similar trade practitioners and academics tend to refer to five types of market risk using Greek or Greek-sounding letters.  These are delta, gamma, theta, and rho. Liquidity Risk             Another type of risk within Palm, Inc. is the liquidity risk. It occurs in the event when cash inflows and current balances are not sufficient for it to cover the outflow requirements of cash. It often necessitates asset liquidation that is costly in nature, for the generation of temporary cash inflows. Market liquidity risk is also included in this type of risk. Market liquidity risk is the risk that is inhibited by volatile markets in the liquidation of losing transactions and/or the establishment of new transactions in hedging existing market risk exposures. The basis for liquidity risk is the risk of cash flows when they occur in time. Credit Risk             This is the risk of the actual or possible non-performance of Palm, Inc. This can be subdivided into a variety of dimensions. Two of them are the settlement versus pre-settlement credit risk, and the direct versus indirect credit risk.             Pre-settlement credit risk arises from the possibility of a party’s failure to make favourable future settlements, or settlements not yet initiated. This results to the counterparties’ exposure to the risk of unexpected replacing of valuable assets in its then-current market prices. On the contrary, settlement risk is associated with the firm’s failure during the settlement window, or the time-period between the transaction’s confirmation and its final settlement. Herstatt risk is another term for this type of credit risk. One way of mitigating this settlement risk is by netting. Example is the cash flows in the same currency, if ever possible. Instead of A owing B and B owing A , the net payment of from B to A is the only cash flow that occurs within the settlement. Although this type of bilateral netting reduces the settlement risk of many financial transactions, contracts involving the exchanging of funds in different currencies or in assets, are impossible to be netted. Therefore, it is subjected to full settlement risk.             On the other hand, direct credit risk is the risk of the failure of the counterparty in delivering the required assets or funds or an increase in the perceived probability of the occurrence of such failure in the future. The former is called default risk, while the latter is termed as a downgrade risk. The direct credit risk borne by a company for both cases is limited to the counterparties and security issuers who have direct contractual relations to that company. Sometimes called credit-dependent market risk or spread risk, indirect credit risk is the risk that the value of an asset declines due to the credit rate change of some firms who have no direct dealings with the enterprise. Explained in a clearer way, the present value of a bundle of cash flows can alter the risk when the quality of a third party credit seems to change. Operational Risk             Operational risk within Palm, Inc. is the risk imposed by situations such as failures in computer systems, internal supervision and control, or events like natural disasters. This further cause unexpected losses on a firm’s derivative positions. Other aspects relate to the quality of personnel and internal controls. One type of operational risk is the irresponsible trading activities by employees, or better known as fraud. On the contrary, the employment of unqualified personnel characterized by their inability to carry out their tasks responsibly is also an operational risk. It can also have similar consequences like that of fraud. In the case of operational risk, problems tend to rise. This is either due to the inadequate attention paid to some process or system, or to the personnel’s failure to perform their duties or ill-specified responsibilities. Therefore, people tend to be at the root for most operational risks, which comes from a questionable decision made by someone, either on purpose or by mistake. Legal Risk             Legal risk is the risk of Palm, Inc. to incur a loss if the contract they thought to be enforceable turns to be the opposite in the actual situation. The Global Derivatives Study Group (1993) has identified several sources of legal risk for innovative financial instruments often associated with risk management. This includes conflicts between the formation of oral contracts and the statutes of frauds in some countries and jurisdictions, the capacity of particular entities in entering specific types of transactions, the enforceability of closeout netting, and the legality of financial instruments. Additionally, sudden changes in the laws and regulations can expose firms to potential losses, as well.            Measuring and Monitoring of Risk A. Risk Analysis             Once Palm, Inc. has already identified the risk exposures to which they are involved with, the risk management process of the company now must include the process of actual comparison of the identified risks to the tolerances of bearing those risks as defined by the stakeholders of the company. The means of the monitoring and comparison is independent of the means of the risk measurement. Some companies may opt to the exploration of alternative methods of risk measurement to enhance their learning on the way of expressing their risk tolerances.               One of the most basic forms of reporting market risk is the nominal exposure report, a report indicating the amount of capital at risk in a given exposure or portfolio of exposures. Think about a pension plan treating equity and fixed income risk as normal risks. They consider it as a need to be able to fund its obligations. Suppose a currency exposure is a risk, which deems to be unnecessary for the plan’s liability funding purposes. Therefore, currency exposure can be tracked and measured, even relative to a policy-defined maximum (Kinney, 2003). Risk analysis within Palm, Inc. involves identifying the most probable threats to an organization and analyzing the related vulnerabilities of the organization to these threats. It is detailed examination including risk assessment, risk evaluation, and risk management alternatives, performed to understand the nature of unwanted, negative consequences to human life, health, property or environment. It is also an analytical process to provide information regarding undesirable events. It is also the process of quantification of the probabilities and expected consequences for identified risks.             There are many security incidents or security-related occurrences or action likely to lead to death, injury, or monetary loss. There are many vulnerabilities in which a company or a person may be at risk. B. Other Recommendations A tie-up or merger of Palm, Inc. with various companies offers tremendous benefits in terms of access to their risk management policies, infrastructure and even its resources. However, this company must not lose sight of its core competencies while pursuing these tie-ups. Otherwise, the image of this company might be put in jeopardy. Meanwhile, the collaboration of Palm, Inc. with its major competitors can be seen as a ridiculous move at first.  However, upon close examination, this move could pave the way for this company to improve even more its risk management. The bottom line is both sides would be able significantly gain in such an alliance. Palm, Inc.’s strengths in product development combined with the risk management capabilities of their competitors can transform them suddenly into an unbeatable force to reckon with. One possible setback, however, is the differences in the cultures of the companies involved. Another possible setback could be whether any of the company’s competitors has the need to form alliances. The third option also focuses on alliances, but this time with either one of the organizations specializing in risk management. The benefits of these alliances should outweigh the costs in the long run. In terms of appropriateness, all three options are able to directly address the current issues mentioned. However, the question remains whether Palm, Inc. could be able to implement any of these options, and whether these options can be acceptable to the key stakeholders. Any merger or alliances may also involve the sharing of expertise. This company has traditionally relied on the inside-out approach. It is important to note that any merger transactions would have many implications on the company’s values and culture as well as the resources. The key stakeholders definitely would be concerned with such options and need to be convinced of the positive aspects. Somehow, Palm, Inc. will be able to overcome this barrier in managing strategic changes in the process of implementing any of the above mentioned strategic options. CONCLUSION The results of the analysis carried out on the risk management of Palm, Inc. indicated very significant effects, even amidst the threats of unrest. Therefore, we could conclude that the risk management of the company could still be expected to improve faster than average. The review of the company’s risk management capabilities and resources revealed very little inconsistencies regarding the company’s strategies. This is coherent with their traditional inside-out approach. However, the need to reconcile both the inside-out and outside-in approaches becomes imperative now for Palm, Inc. The risk analysis among the company environment as well as the risk management and capabilities of the company revealed certain gaps, most of which are biased towards the environment. However, these gaps paved the way towards determining a number of recommended strategic options to secure the company’s competitiveness. Also, Palm, Inc. has to find a balance between adherence to internal forces within the management and to the changing forces of the environment in order to implement such strategic options.
