The hardware composes of the physical components of the computer. The major physical components of a computer are the processor, the memory, storage devices or sometimes referred to as secondary memory such as hard disk drive and optical devices, input/output (I/O) devices such as the keyboard and mouse. The physical components of a computer set is chosen such that they are compatible with each other or support and enhance each component’s capabilities to maximize the use and efficiency of a PC. The software is the intangible, set of machine readable instructions called programs that tell the computer how to perform operations on entered data (STI, 1996). Dell’s Hardware vs. Acer’s Hardware Processor             In choosing your computer, you will have to look first at the quality of its microprocessor. The microprocessor or simply processor is the main component or the “brain” of the computer system because it is the chip that controls the operation of your computer as well as performs arithmetic and logic operations on entered data (STI, 1996). Intel is known in producing high performing processor. Processors are evaluated using the processor number that indicates the processor’s architecture or design and technology used with it, clock speed which indicates how fast it can process data, front side bus (FSB) which is the connecting path between the processor and other components like the memory, and the cache which is a collection of built in memory chips that enhance the processors processing speed (Aquino, 2003).              You can determine the quality of your processor by its (1) processor’s clock speed, measured in megahertz which is the speed of data zip through the electronic circuits, and (2) the size of each individual data bundle it processes (Zarowin,1995). The cache determines the size of data bundle a processor can process or temporarily store, measured in megabytes. Both Dell and Acer uses Intel Pentium 4 because it is the processor that allows users to perform multiple tasks simultaneously or run multiple programs like scanning virus, playing music and searching the internet all at the same time. Dell uses Intel 915GV because it is designed for Intel Pentium 4 processor, supports Intel Graphics Accelerator which is also used in Dell’s Dimension 3100 and LCD displays, has flexible memory for the dual channel DDR2 533/400 or DDR 400/DDR 333 memory (Intel, 2006). Chipset             The chipset is called the hub for all data transfer and determines how fast components in your computer, like the microprocessor, memory, keyboard and various plug-ins, function in relation to other components such as the clock generators, disk controllers, graphics media accelerator, I/O bus, Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports, Direct Media Interface (DMI), ATA Ports, built-in controllers and video and audio ports, thus the chipset that should be chosen is compatible with all other components. Dell uses Intel 915GV chipset which is designed to support Intel Pentium 4 and other features of the Dimension 3100 like the graphics media accelerator. Acer uses SIS661FX, like Intel 915GV, also supports Intel Pentium 4, DDR, the 10/100Mbps LAN card and the RealTek audio card. Systems Memory             The systems memory of your PC is also called the primary memory or the Random Access Memory or RAM, which temporarily stores information from the PC’s operating system, applications and data in current use (Dell, 2006). The amount of your RAM determines how many programs can be executed at one time, how much data can be readily available to a program, and how fast applications perform. Dell’s Dimension 3100 has higher capacity, higher frequency and wider bandwidth than Acer’s Aspire AS80. Higher capacity means you can store more files while higher frequency and greater bandwidth means more improved speed of your computer. Hard Disk             While the RAM is the primary memory, the hard disk, also called fixed disk, is the secondary memory where data can be stored for a long time. The larger the capacity of your hard disk, the more the data can be stored. Both the Dell’s 3100 and Acers AS80 has 80 Gigabytes capacity. Floppy Drive             The floppy drive allows you to save files in removable magnetic disks called floppy disks. Although floppy disks have limited disk space or capacity (1.44MB), it is a convenient storage device that you can bring anywhere like when making PowerPoint Presentation in school, or when copying important files from your lecturers. Dell’s Dimension 3100 has floppy drive while Acer’s floppy drive reader is optional. Optical Drive             Optical drive is an input device used to read CD’s and/or DVDs. When your computer has CD/DVD read-write combo drive, you can record, edit and play music or videos you’re your computer.     Modem             Modem is an important computer component enables you to access DSL or dial-up internet connections. Although there are modems that can be plugged into a port, it is better if your modem is installed as part of the computer (also known as internal modem). Modem is a short term for modulator-demodulator which is used to transmit and receive data over the phone line and is measured in kilobytes per second (kbps) (Zarowin, 1995). The more kilobytes per second your modem can transmit, the faster it transmits and receives data. In 1995, a 28kbps modem was already considered fast at that time. But because of the many data that are needed to be transmitted at present, the modem of your computer should be as high as 56kbps. Other Hardware             Both Dell and Acer features a 17” LCD monitor which is more physically attractive than a CRT monitor. The computer housing of Dell is slightly smaller than Acer. Dell uses a USB mouse and keyboard which is more responsive than PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Software             Dell features the Microsoft Office 2003 that includes the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher, which are the most important software for students like you doing research works. Acer does not have these features, which means that if you buy Acer’s SA80 you still have to purchase separate software for applications like word processing, spreadsheets and others. Although Acer features other software, these software can be easily downloaded free over the internet. You also need an internet browser which you can also download over the internet for free. Licensing             Usually the PC manufacturer and the software vendor (Microsoft) have an agreement that the license will be automatically given to the end-user who bought the computer with the accompanying software. This agreement is called the end-user license agreement. Under this agreement, you are not allowed to have the software be installed in computer network that is used for commercial purposes such as internet café or computer rentals. This means that the software is solely for private used. When you buy other software to another vendor other than the PC vendor where you bought your computer set, you should ask for a licensed version to be sure that you are not getting the pirated version of the software. Getting a licensed version of software entitles you to avail of the services offered by Microsoft. ISP             Internet access is an important communication and research tool today. It is the largest library a student like you can have. In choosing an internet connection, you have to choose between DSL and wireless connection because they are faster than dial-up connection. In Singapore, SingNet is a good internet service provider (ISP) that offers plans for students. It has a broadband unlimited plan especially designed for students at 3500kbps at .30/ a month. Broadband internet is a connection that is capable of transferring large amount of data at high speed. Dell’s Dimension 3100 and Acer’s Aspire AS80 are both internet-ready because they already have LAN card and modem. Just contact an ISP provider like the SingNet and it will be the one to provide the installation. Conclusion             With all the features of Dell Dimension 3100 and Acer Aspire AS80 presented above, Dell is the most advisable PC brand with its Dimension 3100 that is capable of providing you with all your needs in a computer, from the most basic to the more complex. You are also recommended to buy products from Dell online where you can further customize the featured Dell computer above depending on your budget. When a PC is bought, the printer is sold separately; there are printers today that have all in one features (printer, scanner, copier in one). HP is known to have the best printers but Dell also offers printers which can also be seen on their website.   Step 4: Connect the monitor and the computer to electrical outlets Set-up Guidelines Installation of your new computer set is easy as long as you can recognize the port for a particular device. Introduction Interest rates can tell it all.  As shown in figure 1, the Bank of England (BOE) can simply refer to implications of an action to interest rate in order to settle the required amount of money in circulation.  To deal with this graph deeply, it is necessary to discuss the three main tools of BOE to control interest rates and then affect money supply.  This discussion is supplemented with the explanation on how the level of money supply affects the GDP of the economy.    Monetary Tools The first of these tools is altering cost of borrowing.  The tool works by the action of the BOE to increase/ decrease the premium provided to banks (also called discounts) that need liquidity to operate.  Since BOE issues rediscounting bills, gilt repos and straight loans to banks, altering the discounts on such financials against the market rate will influence the behavior of banks in borrowing from the government.  As illustrated by figure 2, the market rate serves as the benchmark of BOE to increase/ decrease discount rate depending on the need of economy for more, fewer or prevailing money.  If the adjustments are required, BOE will alter the current discount rate below market rate to increase money supply or above market rate to decrease money supply.  The illustration is descriptive when banks are discouraged to borrow with high rate and encouraged when faced with low rate relative to market rate.   Money supply is affected because banks serve as borrower and lender of money in the economy.  When it is discouraged to borrow from the government, it is faced with limited liquidity, and in turn, limited available funds to lend hindering money for private spending.  They would also encourage deposits to resolve liquidity issues through higher interest income rates which make additional pressure to money supply reduction due to savings.       The second tool is closing open market operations or monetary base control.  As illustrated by figure 3, open market operations aid the government in controlling money supply.  The more government securities are sold in the open market, the more money is in the hands of government (less money available in the economy) while the reverse is also true.  In contrast, the authority granted to BOE in closing market operations makes this simple illustration relatively complex.  Closing open market operations requires banks to manage and monitor their BOE accounts in a daily basis as to provide interest rate proof from “overnight” shocks.  As shown in the introduction, interest rate has its direct impact to money supply.  BOE has decided to require banks to maintain an end-day or weekly balance of zero as for the former to forecast interest rate shocks especially during holidays when the economy performs an “abnormal” demand for money.  Such pre-determination of banks’ accounts to BOE will award the latter more influence on long-term interest rates movement.              Money supply is affected because the previous unorganized sourcing of banks for BOE funds and BOE’s sourcing of funds in return are newly designed with greater formality.  In effect, market operations that are used to be ambiguous due to several factors unknown to BOE are controlled.  The invisible hand is somewhat lifted in favor of the common good.  As a result, monetary decisions become real-time wherein money supply is relatively easy to set-up.   The last tool is called reserve ratio control.  This tool works when BOE issues an order for banks to maintain a specific amount of assets in liquid form that can be accounted through balances in BOE, bills of exchange, certificates of deposit and money market loans.  The available credit balance of banks available for lending is reduced since they have to keep a specified amount of their assets on-hold.  As illustrated in figure 4, the increase/ decrease of reserve ratio of banks in turn decreases/ increases money supply in circulation because banks is limited on what it can lend previously.  The discouraged lenders will then increase their interest rate for loans and increase their interest rates for deposits as to offset the effects of the increased reserve ratio.                Before 1981, United Kingdom required banks to deposit special deposit accounts to be held as frozen in BOE until there is an indication that the economy needs additional money and such amounts can be withdrawn available for lending operations.  BOE has the purpose of controlling the amount of credit that the bank can offer in order for money supply to be controlled at BOE’s desired level.    Can the Bank of England Influence GDP?             Yes.  With BOE having substantial influence, if not authoritative, in money supply and operations of banks, it can undoubtedly influence GDP.  Since money supply is tagged with a lot of economic variables such as interest rates, inflation, exchange rate and international trade, monetary policy held by BOE has its way to use this related variables that will result to a determined economic environment.  The more active the economy (economic boom), the more money supply is required to finance its operations.  This supply will be used to buy raw materials and other factors of production.  In effect, the amount of GDP the economy can produce depends on the availability of money the economy can provide to businesses.               This statement makes banks crucial as BOE dummies in aiding the government to obtain its economic targets including the level of GDP.  As the intermediary of available money, banks are the primary source of financing/ augmenting of operations in the business sector.  When it is forced to hold available liquidity in favor of BOE’s regulation, new/ current producers are hanged to continue their operations until contraction is lifted.  The time lapse in waiting for funds including the risk of closure or discouragement to build ventures has then direct effects to annual output of firms in the economy.  In contrast, when banks are not hindered to lend its liquidity, business prospects are obtained and strategies are deployed that results to higher output contributing to GDP in aggregate.    For the part of consumers, when banks lack liquidity, the former are motivated to save due to premiums in deposits.  In effect, consumption is deferred in favor of future interest income gains.  This will then have impact on consumption pattern since available money in the economy to buy goods/ services are limited.  Thus, businesses are challenged to predict whether cessation of demand is an emergence of deferred demand or a real recession at hand making some shocks in GDP.    Conclusion       BOE is on top of monetary policy wherein banks serve as the implementation medium since they are fewer and easily controllable than when BOE confronts with individual economic actors.  As relationship between the government and banks is considered mutualism, the control of money supply becomes efficient especially when the economy is targeting a specific indicator such as the level of GDP.  Hidden in its three main tools lies the concept of interest rate manipulation to obtain the desired level of inflation, therefore, production (supply) and spending (demand) are efficiently managed.  In doing this, banks is required or made to react to BOE policies in order for interest rates to be leveled with desired level of money supply in the economy.              Bibliography Book   Sloman, J & Sutcliffe, M 2001, Economics of Business, 2nd Edition, Prentice Hall.      Electronic Sources   Bank of England; 2006; London; viewed on 8 May 2006; www.bankofengland.co.uk       Credit:ivythesis.typepad.com

Design Computing and Digital Media: An Analysis about Sensated Environment commonly known as Pervasive Computing   The growth of technological advancement is fast emerging and many people have relied to the used of this. The rapid growth of computer has been thought to become a device that would extend and amplify human thought ( 1945).  As part of this, computing devices nowadays were seen primarily as engines that could reduce loaded laboratory works and calculations. And through the World Wide Web which serves as a collective device for the society, mechanisms such as personal files, bookmarks can be easily done. These devices are scattered into the world and become one of the most needed tool for every human. People today are fortunate that everyone have known and experience what it is like to live in a world where the physical is being inhabited by the digital.   More and more, the digital will permeate the physical space in a seamless manner. It is expected that computing will be everywhere. Hence, this paper will discuss about sensated environments, also known as intelligent rooms, smart spaces and, more generally, pervasive computing.  It will tackle the definition of sensated environment, its purpose and where does it is commonly used.  It will also view the description of the software, hardware and network infrastructure require operating a sensated environment.  Furthermore, this paper will have an in-depth investigation about Agent architectures for controlling sensated environment and new methods of interaction between humans and computers in sensated environments.   Computing revolution has begun to affect the lives of every individual in ways that they don’t even notice. Through great imaginations that became reality, technologists have produced a computing device that is very useful in this new generation. Such computing device is the pervasive computing or the sensated environment.  Pervasive Computing or sensated environment is a term that signifies several new elements of computing. One element involves pervasive computation computers and sensors “everywhere” in devices, appliances, equipment, in homes, workplaces and factories, and in clothing. Another element involves pervasive communication which is a high degree of communication among devices and sensors through a ubiquitous and secure network infrastructure with a wired core and wireless adjuncts that communicate with the core. Because computation will become so integrated into our lives and activities, natural forms of human-computer interaction, such as spoken dialogue with computers, will become more important. Pervasive computing or sensated environment encompasses the dramatically expanding sphere of computers embedded within and intrinsically part of larger devices.    The current phase of pervasive computing or sensated environment, in which computers are already being embedded in many devices has been perceived to have its purpose. Making the computer disappear is the main purpose of sensated environment or pervasive computing.  In the last two decades personal computers and mobile technologies did spread through out the world making people to be forced in adapting these devices’ stiff interfaces. Sensated environment aims at making devices to adapt to human behavior and environment, sharing and managing information anytime and anywhere.    Also pervasive computing provides convenient access to relevant information and applications through a new class of ubiquitous, intelligent appliances that have the ability to easily function when and where needed ( 2004). Another role of sensated environment is to help human beings in laboratory works and calculations that requires a greater used of cognitive thinking. Consider how devices have been organized in a highly demanding cognitive environment such as space shuttles control room and even those on a nuclear submarine’s control room.  The total volume of raw data available in these setting would overwhelm a human operator because his cognitive thinking will not meet the expected cognitive functions for such calculations. Through pervasive computing or sensated environment in which sensing and context awareness are the key aspects (2004) and which are essential to any system that can selectively alerts the user it enables the user to easily understand his obligations.   Sensated Environment goes beyond the realm of today’s personal computer to ubiquitous devices that are becoming smaller and more powerful with embedded technology and connectivity. It concerns the idea that almost any device, from clothing to appliances to cars to homes and to the human body, can be imbedded with chips to connect the device to an infinite network of other devices. Pervasive computing or sensated environment combines current network and wireless technologies with progressively smaller computing devices, voice recognition, artificial intelligence, and Internet capability, to create an environment where the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available ( 2004). Sensated environment envisions a world of communicating small and potentially portable devices, sensors, and actuators.   The current phase of sensated environment, in which computers are already being embedded, can be installed in many devices.  There are four aspects that sensated environment can be perceived.  These are computing which are spread throughout the environment.  Today humans are facing the end of the dominance of the traditional personal computer. Computing is already embedded in more places than just the grasp of desktop computers at hand. Computers make cars run properly with antilock braking systems and power steering. For this to happen, components will need not only to publish their interfaces and protocols for interaction, but also make known their resource requirements such as required bandwidth, computing power, memory and battery consumption (2004). Development of pervasive computing systems requires new tools, most notably in the form of debuggers and monitors. A pervasive computing system may consist of a number of autonomous computing devices interconnected in networks. It is well known that debugging of distributed applications is a difficult task. Debugging of pervasive computing applications will be even more difficult. A major reason for this is that a number of small and wireless devices may be involved. Some pervasive computing systems may also require constant monitoring.   After knowing the definition of sensated environment and discussing its purpose and understanding the description of software, hardware and networked infrastructure required operating a sensated environment, this paper will then investigate some of the most important issues attached to sensated environment. First thing to investigate is about the application sensated environment or pervasive computing. Pervasive computing or sensated environment technologies do more than connect these devices to the Internet. Not only can users view content through their WAP phone, but domestic devices, consumer electronics, and other devices, such as cars and planes, can access specialized services and provide services to other devices and users. Pervasive computing creates a universal network that will include business models such as e-commerce and home networks. It is the basis for the next generation of the Internet. More and more devices contain computer chips and pervade every fabric of life. The concepts are not new; in the early nineties, many companies created visions of this future. The extension of the existing Internet is also often called the universal network.  Moreover, the greatest role of pervasive computing or sensated environment is that it helps this generation in everyday living, it provides people the opportunity to use the technology everywhere in the environment may it be for business that provides goods and services or even just at homes.  Through their pervasiveness, these new technologies can collect a lot of data about the users and their habits. Most people are concerned that this data will be misused by the companies collecting the information. To make the most out of pervasive computing or sensated environment technologies, information must be collected and shared among partners. Certain information about customers’ online behavior, preferences, and so on will have to be shared between supply chains either explicitly or implicitly, to allow customers to navigate seamlessly around their information and services “universe.” Without technology that can reassure customers about service providers’ adherence to privacy policies, regulators may inhibit the sharing of such information ( 2001).    Sensated environment as I view it can have many applications.  But for me, I proposed that the sensated environment may be applied also to education.  It is very important that the education system must merge on the changes that are happening to the world technologically. Authorities should implement rules allowing pervasive computing to be used in the education so as to help all the staff, teachers, faculty, parents and most especially all those students who are the hope of the nations.  I suggest that education authorities must be able to maximize the use of this technology for improving students’ performance. In addition, e-learning through the use of sensated environment must be promoted as soon as possible. And since, sensated environment provides tools to manage information easily this will be helpful for parents and teachers to coordinate easily because teachers can easily communicate to the parents by means of this technology.  Using sensated environment in education system will not only improve the procedures of the system but will also improve the performance of each and everyone in such environment.   Lastly, this paper will investigate the and new methods of interaction between humans and computers in sensated environments. The world today is facing rapid changes, emergence of new technologies to be used have made it easy for people to interact with the computers. There are new methods of interaction between humans and computers that are arising all over sensated environments. The vision of sensated environment is to interconnect all people by a globally integrated, ubiquitous network promises greater empowerment for the individual. Recent advancements in sensated environments technologies promise the arrival of a new era in sensated environment, marked by the emergence of high-speed, multilayer, in-home networks that will integrate traditional home automation and control technologies with real-time, media-rich applications like voice and video conferencing.   Most importantly, these new technologies also involve new deployment strategies that will bring broadband internetworking applications to the domestic mass market. As part of these new methods of interactions between humans and computers, more individuals have been dependent on the electronic creation, storage and transmittal of personal, financial and other confidential information which demands highest security.  People rely mostly on computers because it provides them with complete access to time sensitive data, regardless of physical location. These devices includes mobile phones, office PCs, and home entertainment system that helps humans to access that information and work together in one seamless, integrated system.   All in all sensated environment aims to enable people to accomplish an increasing number of personal and professional transactions by using a new class of intelligent and portable devices. It gives people convenient access to relevant information stored on powerful networks, allowing them to easily take action anytime, anywhere. These new intelligent appliances, or “smart devices,” are embedded with microprocessors that allow users to plug in to intelligent networks and gain direct, simple, and secure access to both relevant information and services. These devices are as simple to use as calculators, telephones, or kitchen toasters. In addition, sensated environment simplifies life by combining open-standards-based applications with everyday activities. It removes the complexity of new technologies, enables people to be more efficient in their work, and leaves more leisure time.
