Journal Comparison The two journal articles present a clear view on the troubles of many Black Americans during the past centuries. What was explained in the articles was their dreadful fate from the hands of the White Americans, as blacks suffered much from the discrimination of the whites. The first article discusses the plight of blacks, particularly of the black women. During the slave times, black women suffered much from working too hard in the homes of the whites, as they do the laundry, wash the dishes, cook food for their masters and all other heavy chores. It points out how the author is vexed by how the white women lie to their friends of working in the house, when they know in truth that the black women did all the hard work. According to the article, the white women are “untouchable” and feel like “angels” as they are the masters of the blacks and they can do whatever they want. But in reality, both the black and the white women are the same. The color of their blood is red and that same blood runs through their veins, and the way the whites stress their difference with the blacks paved way for the desire of the blacks for liberation. The articles emphasized also that the blacks possess anger for the whites but this anger helped them to make the whites realize that they are as important in their society; they are also humans, they have rights, and they suffer much from problems such as pollution, poverty, malnutrition and hunger. The article by  talks about the role of Black women in the society. According to the article, black women work side by side with black men for their survival, for their liberation, and for giving justice from so much injustice. The author was able to develop a program for her people, called the Freedom Farm Coop and became involved with the Young World Developers. The author’s involvement with the programs helped poor black and white families as well, in resolving their problems regarding poverty and hunger. Her determination to aid many has helped many people as well. The author also used her influence to pursue the education of her people and strongly believed that the excellent skills of black teachers are not different from the skills of whites. It is true that the black women has suffered much from their situation as slaves, but instead of retaliating against the whites, they fought for their rights for equality, gathered resources and aid from many concerned citizens around the world, as the author did, and made a difference by protecting their humanity. The author cited that during one occasion, many young people around the world are having a walk or a strike against poverty and hunger. The funds from this walk will go to the program of Hamer and contribute to help many poor black and white families in the society. In the second article, the slavery and the inhumane situation of the blacks or the Negroes in general, were given in detail. The blacks suffer much from the unusual brutality and the merciless scourging during the slave times. The article also reported that the white masters could not kill their slaves for losing thousands of dollars, so it is much better to sell them than kill them in order to get rid of them. It also emphasized that the whites own the body and soul of the Negro, as they have great power over them. However, the time for the whites to disown them came at the time of the Emancipation or the Negroes’ liberation. But Emancipation did not do anything good for the Negroes, instead, the whites were given more power, as they do not only physically punish and scourge the Negroes, but kill them as well. The article reports that many Negroes were murdered and executed during these times, having no judicial or legal trials. This matter has awakened the conscience of the public and lead to thinking of excuses for the barbarism of the whites toward the Negroes. The article cited , who is the greatest of all Negroes, to have had come up with three excuses for the crimes. First excuse of the whites is to repress and stamp out alleged “race riots” due to the planned insurrection of the Negroes against the whites. Many colored men and women were slaughtered during those times, but the idea of insurrection never materialized, nor was any Negro rioter apprehended because of it. For this matter, the Southern whites came up with the second excuse, which had its birth during the turbulent times of reconstruction (). Negroes were given the right of franchise and to vote, but this did not last long as the whites would not respect the fact that the Negroes also belong to a republican country. The government has given them freedom but could not and would not protect that freedom. For the poor Negro, the small white ballot that he holds is the symbol of his humanity and citizenship, and the whites would not grant them that right, as the whites won again and the blacks became voiceless once more in the councils. The Negroes were eliminated from all participation in state and national elections, and their killing has not been stopped. The third excuse would be the worst, as the Negroes were condemned to be rapists and assailants of womanhood. This happens when a black man makes a relationship with a white woman, and the Negro is killed for it. With all these accusations, the image of the Negro much worsened and suffered much more. It could be deduced that their era in slave times could be much better than in their time of their liberation. One example of this damnation of the Negroes was exemplified in the movie based on the book by  entitled A Time to Kill (1996). In this movie, a ten-year-old black girl was raped and beaten by two white men, and his father takes the law into his own hands and murders them. The most compelling question raised by this film is whether a black man can get a fair trial from a white judge and jury (1996). This situation is relevant to the plight of the Negroes before as injustice for the Negro prevails that time. The significance of these two articles lies on its impact to the readers. We can deduce that both articles cite the injustices that black people suffer from the whites, as they are always wrongly accused, punished and maltreated in different situations. Both articles emphasize the impact of slavery to the blacks and both stress that these injustices did not hinder them from doing and fighting for what is right despite the maltreatments but instead, it helped them to fight for equality and justice in the society. The good Samaritans in their time became their inspiration. These people or missionaries helped them understand Christianity, and this pushed them to hold on to their faith. In the first article, the author mentioned the story of the old wise man, and the plot of two young persons to deceive him. The birds in the story represent the black people and their freedom, as many circumstances test their faith and endurance, but in turn, their fate will still be in their hands; that their freedom from slavery and maltreatment depends on how they will do about it. It is better nowadays, as people are more open now regarding the issue of racism. Racism is a big issue in different parts of the world and racial discrimination has affected many issues present in the society. This article has given us a clear picture of what people think before, and this can be used to re-evaluate our perceptions regarding the culture and race of different individuals.  We must always bear in mind that each person is a unique individual, belongs to a specific race and has certain beliefs and practices. The purpose of this paper is to review and to evaluate five scholarly papers that deal with the topic of self disclosures. It will try to examine each of the five scholarly articles and how they particularly address the issue of gender and self disclosure. These journal entries and articles were carefully selected from a list different compilation of journals regarding the topic. Careful selection and reading of various articles were done to facilitate thoroughly selecting the articles that would best suite the issue presented in this paper.             There are five articles that were scrutinized and reviewed. The first article is entitled Self Disclosure and Listener Verbal Support in the Same-Gender and Cross Gender Friends Conversation written by . Other articles are  Close Emotional Relationship With Women Versus Men written by , Gender, Religion and Adolescent Patterns of Self Disclosure in the Divided society of Northern Ireland by  Sexual Satisfaction and Sexual Self-Disclosure Within Dating Relationship written by . The last journal article read is a work by  entitled Sibling Self Disclosure in Early Adolescent. These articles were acquired from different journals that would be appropriately mentioned in the Work Cited Page.             The first article written by  discussed the relationship between gender and self disclosure with regards to the gender. It looked at interaction and self disclosure that exist between friends using same gender and cross gender references. The article also argued about the examination with regards to the process of self disclosure by inspecting both the discloser and the listener’s conversational behavior (). At first the article predicted that women would demonstrate both more self disclosure and more active listening when compared to men. The findings of the study confirmed that the gender of the speaker and the partner has affected conversational behavior during self disclosure sessions. Unlike other authors and researchers in this line of topic, it was found out that men had more self disclosures regardless of the gender of the partner although Leaper and she further claimed that this fact is plausible because of the structure of the questions wherein they are only asked to talk about their family and friends (). The study also concluded that men are more likely to self disclose and respond to assigned topics when compared to women while women are more at ease when self disclosing about family and personal matters.             The second article by  is about self disclosure and examination of the difference and similarities that exist in a number of heterosexual men’s close emotional relationship correlated with other men women. It attempts to see if self disclosure, close emotional and sexual relationship is affected by the gender of an individual while hoping to identify reasons and demographical factors that tend to affect the outcome of the study (). The study found out that generally men feel more emotionally close to the opposite sex. Most of the respondents feel closer to women because they see that they have a greater ability to disclose to men, it gives them emotional and physiological comfort when talking to women and they also feel that they are understood by women (). The respondents also added that sexual intimacy is shared with the women that they are talking to and that age, ethnicity, educational level, occupation and relationship status do not have any bearing on the nature and level of self disclosure between men and women ().             Another article written about self disclosure is made by  in his study regarding self disclosure in the adolescent stage and the influence of religion in self disclosure activities. Northern Ireland was chosen because of the polarity and divisiveness that exist between the Catholic and Protestant populace of that place (). The study specifically look at the effect of gender and religious affiliation on the level of self-disclosure of adolescents using same-sex friend, opposite-sex friend, same-sex stranger and opposite-sex stranger category ().             In this study, it was found out that female adolescents disclose more when they are speaking to individuals with the same sex when compared to male individuals. It was also found out that the adolescent female also discloses more when to the same-sex stranger individuals compared to their male counterparts ().  It was also noted that men and women prefer to self-disclose with females than male friends and strangers. With regards to the aspect of religion it was noted by the researchers that Catholic adolescents engage more in self disclosure in relation to strangers when statistics are compared to their Protestant counterparts ().             A study made by  regarding self disclosure within a dating relationship was also studied. The specific focus of the study in this case is the examination of the association between sexual and nonsexual self disclosure and sexual satisfaction. It also examined the association between sexual and nonsexual self disclosure to relationship satisfaction. The research also studied if whether sexually self-disclosing reported greater relationship satisfaction ().             The study found out that self disclosure is closely linked with the length of the relationship, frequency of affection and relationship satisfaction (). The ability to self disclose is also directly affected various factors such as commitment, relationship satisfaction and level of affection (). The sample population as noted by the researcher feel most free to self discloses their sexual likes and dislikes if they perceive that the relationship can be positive and if the sexual self disclosure can be reciprocal. Sexual self disclosure meanwhile did not have any effect on the relationship and sexual satisfaction of an individual in a dating relationship and the study suggested that within dating relationships, the communication and disclosure of sexual likes and dislikes are not the primary factors in building a long lasting relationship ().             The last article reviewed is the study made by  wherein she investigated on the frequency of self disclosure using three different sets of recipients namely closest-in-age sibling, parents and friends. The study also focused on the self disclosure of the siblings and it examined the association of self disclosure with factors such as the topic of sibling disclosure, quality of sibling relationship and the frequency of these self disclosure activities ().             Based on the study it was surmised that the respondents discloses more frequently to their siblings of the same sex than to their parents or friends and that the level of self disclosure reflects the warmth, affection and the love that the siblings had for each other (). As stated in the paper, this is due to the nature and the environment that surrounds the sample population which was a closely knit English speaking community. Ordinary activities that is jointly participated by the siblings inside and outside the home also increases trust, mutual concerns and love that enables frequent self disclosure between them (). The study also found out that a positive and a direct relationship between the attitude of the respondents to their siblings and the level of self disclosure that they are experiencing ().             In reading and analyzing the text of the five articles, we can see that self disclosure can be affected by different factor, both external and internal. Internal factor such as the closeness and affection that a family member receives from other members of the family have a significant impact on the way he/she handles him/herself and how he/she tries to let other people know him/her. In one of the studies discussed in was found out that the closer bond between family members facilitates greater self disclosure and that these self disclosures are usually between siblings. In a relationship, self disclosure is affected by the level of intimacy between partners and the level of commitment that is contributed by each person. External factors can refer to the location and environment and orientation of the society that can directly and indirectly affect self disclosure activities. Issues such as sex, religion and personal preferences plays a significant role in shaping how a person views himself and how other view him/her. For example, in the study conducted in Northern Ireland, Protestant adolescents had a lower tendency to disclose herself/himself with a stranger.             With regards to gender, men as stated by the articles mentioned above have a higher tendency to self disclose to the opposite sex because of emotional, physical and sexual needs. But in the case of women of all age brackets they are more likely to self disclose with people who are emotionally close to them like their parents, friends and siblings.             Although in the above mentioned cases, it is clear that the studies and research were done using different and varied number of respondents and sample population not to mention each study is distinct and unique because each of them focus on an aspect of self disclosure, it is safe to assume that each study reiterates the dynamics that influences the process of self disclosure.                     Credit:ivythesis.typepad.com

JUST PUT JOURNAL ENTRIES EVERYDAY, LIKE A DIARY BUT OF A WORKING PERSON.  8:00 Am  10 May 2011 Today is my first day at work here at the Shelter for All.   We are a non-profit organization that cares for abused, abandoned, neglected and troubled children/youth. Our center provides the following services: <ul type="disc" style="margin-bottom: 0in"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	 	Temporary/emergency housing for abused, abandoned, neglected or troubled 	children, many in need of medication/pharmaceutical administration.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	 	Meeting the needs of special education children.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	 	Long-term independent housing.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	 	Placement of children by the Juvenile Courts, Job and Family Services 	Department, and other placing agencies.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	An 	alternative to institutionalization for mildly troubled children, 	developmentally disabled and the physically challenged.</li> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #111111; line-height: 200%"> 	 	Animal Education Therapy Program.</li> </ul> 5:00 PM Long, long day for me.  But a successful one.  The majority of the day was spent getting familiar with the premises and getting to know the children who are at the center and meeting all the personnel.  I would say that everything went off to a good start.  They have started something wonderful for these beautiful children.  Abused and neglected children appear to have no sense of security to help them acknowledge and resolve their emotional pain.  Here at the center we enforce a positive approach by helping the children take pride in their selves and we teach them socially appropriate behavior.  The staff and therapists work towards self-sufficiency for each of the children while all the time using discipline, love and other positive reinforcements.  We want the children to realize that there is a tomorrow and to have them surrounded in a secure environment. 8:00 AM 31 May, 2011 Almost one month at this center and believe me every single day is precious time spent with these special children.  One of our primary objectives is to break the present cycle of abuse and disruption and to help every child live a normal and fruitful life. The sound of children laughing and talking is music to my ears.  Those are the signs of happy children.  It makes me happy that we have contributed to helping these children get their lives back again. 5:00 PM There is one girl I have taken an interest in.  She was physically and sexually abused by her step-father for several years.  At one point he almost killed her and that is how she ended up in our center.  I met her when I first arrived at the center.  She had not yet recovered from her wounds and had bandages everywhere.  I have never encountered such a battered spirit before.  This girl was so scared of everything including her own shadow!  We’ve had to separate her from the rest of the group because we are working to heal her first and gain some confidence before reintroducing her to the group. After a lot of therapy sessions and one on one session, she is starting to heal.  I think next week we will try to introduce her to a group to join some of the group projects we are doing. 8:00 Am 10 June, 2011 Field trip day!  More later as I need to organize the troops to get on the buses and to make sure everything we need is taken care of.  Logistics!  I hope we do not have a breakdown from any one of the kids. 7:00 PM Today was a mega-early day.  But what great excitement for everyone.  We had a field trip to one of the farms.  It was a wonderful day- the sun was out and it was breezy.  There were a total of 2 buses and 60 kids!  Everyone was abuzz with excitement.  Such joy to see the happiness on their faces.  We only had one incident where 2 boys had it out with each other because one would not give what the other wanted.  Besides that, everything went off without a hitch. At the farm the children were able to interact with some animals at the petting zoo.  Being with animals is therapeutic.  The children can relate to the fragility of the baby rabbits and gerbils they got to play with.  They also learned about bees and the different products created from the bees’ honey.  The children got the chance to identify the queen bee in a colony.  The farm also provided them a snack with some bread and fresh honey. There were some games we played which promoted team cooperation.  One of the children’s favorite was eating the apple game.  It involved 2 children, an apple on a string, and the object of the game was to finish eating the apple.  All in all it was a successful day and everyone is looking forward to the next field trip.      Credit:ivythesis.typepad.com
