This is an analysis of the article entitled “Colleges want drinking date debate”; in relation to Jack Lule’s proposition as to the model of 7 master myths based on data about national, agenda-setting US news media. Furthermore, as an analysis it should include the test whether this model is descriptive adequate or incomplete when national, agenda-setting news media in South East Asia is concerned.


The paper will be presented first by what Lule’s proposition, which is to be followed by the analysis. It is necessary to note that the analysis may not produce an outcome that has a relation to the proposition of Lule. A conclusion will end the paper taking into consideration the key points that have been discussed within the paper.


 


LULE’S PROPOSITION


            According to Lule, the following are the seven myths that can be related to news: the myth of the victim, which means that news alleviates and transfers death to sacrifice; myth of scapegoat , which means it degrades and demeans threat the comfort of those whose in power; the myth of hero, which means that stories that proclaim but defines great; the myth of good mother, which means that new nurtures or nourishes; the myth of trickster, which means that it raise the doubling question for the news; the myth of the other world, which means that neat, dramatic contrast that affirms a group ways of life and the myth of flood, which means that news can be a humbling power of nature.


            The myths stated by Lule were are all based on how news is related to how people and journalist look at news. Myths can be considered as something that cannot be existent but with the analysis of Lule, he gave way to what people could have gotten by reading or making news.


 


SUBJECT ARTICLE


            The subject article was about the claim of several college presidents on lowering the drinking age from twenty-one years old to eighteen years old. The presentation of article was not to inform the readers as to the outcome of the claim of the college presidents but to the different position of those people who have agreed to the suggestion. Those persons who are against such proposition were also cited.


            The author views the news article as rather an informative type of news. On this type of news, information has been relayed but the facts relayed are not about the happening of an event but on the matters that may govern the happening of such event.


 


ANALYSIS


            It is the author’s perception that Lule’s seven myths are not applicable to the subject article. As aforementioned, the subject is an informative one which does not present the happening of an event but the matters that could alter or pave way to the happening of the event.


            On the other hand, the Lule’s seven myths dwells on the news articles, which present events that, have transpired. The myths focus on the impact of the happening of an event to the readers, whereas the subject matter of the subject article dwells on what can the proposition of the college president do. Hence, Lule’s myths are not applicable.


            However, in order to give readers the right amount of analysis as regards to the subject article, the author will use the organizational connections theories. The author believes that the subject articles are not based on any methodological connections.


            There are many types of organizational connections but in lieu of this analysis, the author will just provide readers the connections that are consistent with the subject article.  The first one is the Sequential Connections in Time Occurrence of an event. This type of connections deals with the facts that one is referring about. The happening of an event is the subject, but the information is placed in a manner that it may refer to the future, to the past or the present.


The sequence of the facts focus on what may happen after the event happened or before the event transpired. For analysis, the subject article of this paper is the “Colleges want drinking age debate”, the focus of the article is to give the readers the information as to the different opinions of the people that could have may have been affected upon the realization of such event.


 It is necessary to quite this line from the subject article, “But even before the presidents begin the public phase of their efforts, which may include publishing newspaper ads in the coming weeks, they are already facing sharp criticism.” The said line clearly reflects the objective of the writer. The sharp criticism was presented in the subject article after the said line. The writer has presented several opposing and affirming sides of people. Hence, the report presented is treated in way that someone is talking about the happening of the lowering of the drinking age, which such person talking is not yet on present on the said happening.


  The next organization connection that is related to the subject article is the Comparative Connections Similarities or differences between two or more processes or stages in these processes. A Similarity of an unfamiliar objects behaviors or characteristics to those of a more familiar object. In the subject article there is a comparison of what difference can the lowering of the drinking age can make. There are those who argue that lowering the drinking age will only makes matter worst. In addition, there are those who look at the said proposition that it could be the right thing to do.  Both the sides of the parties cited in the article are very different. The comparison is not apparent, but the writer leaves the actual comparison to the readers in order for them to come up also with their own opinion, in taking a side.


 


CONCLUSION


            As stated, it is the position of the author that Lule’s myths are not related to the subject article. The focus of Lule’s myths is the news report, which discussed matters that have transpired already. The myths convey the impact or the importance of the happening of an event to the loves of the readers. The implications presented in Lule’s myths are based on what the readers can perceive and acquire to the event reported.


            On the other hand, the author has provided a different analysis using the organizational connections. These organizational connections are theories, which present facts or information that may have happened, transpired or will be happening. The subject article is given an analysis in relation to organizational connections theories. Because the facts given are not events but relayed in a manner that the readers are given the chance to look through within as regards to the subject matter.


            The subject article presented facts but it leaves the readers to analyze further the information given. In addition, the subject article did not give readers any kind of feeling that can subject the readers to the myth of Lule; hence, such are not applicable.
