THE IMPORTANCE OF NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Specifically, nonverbal communication is   another process of communication where in there is wordless messages   sent through body movements or gestures, touch, posture, facial expression, and eye contact.  In the same manner, messages could also be sent through objects or artifacts like by the way the person dress up, by hairstyle, or architecture, symbols and icons.  In addition, dance and handwriting are another way of nonverbal communication process.  Nonetheless, study of nonverbal communication   is focused more on the face to face interaction of the people.    This can be classified into three main areas that include environmental conditions, physical characteristics of the communicators and the behaviors of the communicators during interaction process.   Many scholars consider nonverbal communication as more important to verbal communication since most of the nonverbal messages mainly express emotions and attitudes and powerful.

In this connection, studies revealed that clothes which worn by women which often   shows some skin;  tells  that they are ready to mingle with men and  send signal to them that they are interested to  be in a  romantic relationship. In addition, research also found out that taller people are more attractive as well as impressive to the eyes of other people.  This is relevant in applying for a job.  It has been a culture that in  among the huge number of applicants; it always turn out that the taller candidates for the job have the better chances to land the job.  As a result, there are some petite women who even wear high heels for them to look tall or even taller.  As well as small speakers fond to stand on a platform every time they speak   so that the entire audience would see and hear them.  On the other hand, environmental factors and physical space also affect to the behavior of communicators during interaction.  A use of space differs from one culture to another; and it varies from intimate, social, personal to public space.

Nevertheless, there are some difficulties among different people from different culture with non verbal communication.    Normally, people vary with the real message that they want to impart to their receiver.  So as women are more expert in nonverbal communication than men.  Correspondingly, many scholars say that nonverbal communication is important because it has multiple functions as it  is used to repeat the verbal message; for instance, if two people are talking about directions, it is best to point  a finger to the proper direction  he wants to  point out to  the other person.  Additionally, often times, a “nod” means “yes”, or sends a   positive or favorable message to other person or people; while a “wink”   means otherwise.  Furthermore, nonverbal communication   also regulates interactions.  Just a gesture of putting finger to the lips would indicate that there is a need to keep silent.  Moreover, nonverbal communication is more significant in intercultural relationships. Equally important is the posture of a person sends different messages to various nations in the world.  In Japan, bowing is a major sign of high respect to other people.  Whereas, in Northern Europe, slouching your body while talking to someone means a “rude”   behavior towards them.  Whilst in Turkey, putting   hands in the pocket while talking to someone shows disrespect   gesture to other party.  As well as sitting with legs crossed is an offensive gesture in Ghana, Turkey.   Even in Thailand and Saudi Arabia, showing somebody’s soles of feet is offensive as well.  And, there are still more countries in the world that have gender distinction based on acceptable posture.

For instance, people vary their opinions and judgments on others by the way they dress up along with their general appearance.  Typically, dress is one of the status symbols in the society.  Next is the body movement that signifies on the emotional state of a person that includes tapping of fingers, jiggling coins which connotes the desire to   be in control.  While leaning towards another, shows that two persons have intimate relationship.  In the contrary, moving away from a person means dislike or aloofness.  And many more body movements and gestures that send key messages during interaction.  And speaking of gestures, there are various gestures in one country that are acceptable or may be offensive to other countries.  As a matter of fact,   gestures differ from one culture to another culture.  In the same degree, eye contact indicates a strong interest of attention, defines also one’s authority and status in the society.  In the Philippines, if someone could not look straight in your eyes, it means that the person does have an ill-intention or something evil that he keeps within himself.  More than the above mentioned   factors, there are many more   nonverbal communication body, movements, gestures and facial expressions that indicate   strong impact on how an interaction becomes successful.
