The students will produce a report based on their chosen case studies in which they identify future developments and trends and apply and evaluate Rose’s theory of Lesson Drawing. Rose (1993, p 13) suggests a lesson is not a disjointed set of ideas about what to do. It requires a cause-and-effect model or at least an association showing how a programme, or lesson designed on the basis of experience elsewhere can be of use to other areas.  In creating a conceptual model of how programmes deal with specific problems the models should not describe a lesson’s  “attributes using words that are nation-specific. A model should be generic, specifying the basic elements in clear concepts” (Rose, 1993, p 29) and one of the conditions for lesson drawing is that access to information should be relatively easy to obtain (Nash, 2003).

Coursework Aim

To enable the students to apply and evaluate the theory of Lesson Drawing and its application to tourism policy formulation and future tourism developments.

Learning Outcomes

3. Apply the theory of Lesson drawing in comparative tourism research.

4.Identify future developments and trends associated with tourism developments.

Presentation Format / Instructions

The report should be approximately 3000 words and should be word-processed and should include reference to published texts and journals. There should be a full range of referenced material and all sources should be fully referenced.

Criteria for Assessment

Working in pairs (or individually if you wish) use the countries from assignment One as case studies and then use, apply and evaluate Rose’s theory of Lesson Drawing. You should identify issues and problems associated with tourism policy development that will impact on the effectiveness of the policy delivery (using and referring to the Causal Models from assessment One). You will be expected to contrast the two case studies

utilising and referencing to Roses theory of Lesson Drawing. You should identify and apply possible lessons that could be imported to overcome the issues identified. Your choice of lessons and Rose’s theory should be critically evaluated.

In the context of your chosen case studies you will be expected to consult, summarise and evaluate a wide range of referenced material and information and then discuss the policy issues associated with their development.
