In comparison to Sternberg’s Theory of Intelligence
Two of the three components of Sternberg’s intelligence theory are being compared in this paper. Basing on the lists of the characteristics above, there is an apparent difference between the academic intelligence and everyday intelligence that coincide to Sternberg’s theory.
According to Sternberg, these are the corresponding characteristics of academic and everyday intelligence:
Academic Intelligence
Everyday Intelligence
Problems are formulated by other people
Require problem recognition and formulation
Problems are clearly defined
Poorly defined
It comes with all information needed to solve
Require seeking information
Only one right answer
Several acceptable answers
Disembodied from ordinary experience
Embedded in and require prior ordinary experience
Little or no intrinsic interest
Require motivation and personal involvement
With the above views of Sternberg on the comparison of academic intelligence and everyday intelligence, it directly correlates to the one stated in my lists. As characterized above, Everyday intelligence is gained through adaptation to, shaping of, and selection of real-world environments relevant to one’s life ( 1984).
