Health promotion Programs and Evaluation
The development of health promotion plans and the evaluation of these is a very complex process. Many factors need to be considered when planning a program. One of the major factors in the development of a program is the understanding of health behaviour change. What factors are more likely to result in the individual changing poor health behaviours? There are a number of models to explain health behaviour change. Some of these include the health belief Model, the Theory of reasoned Action Model, and the Stages of Change Model. The stages of change model is very popular and has been used in many areas of health. Some of these include anti-smoking campaigns, the reduction in substance use programs, and the increase in physical activity programs. Motivational interviewing is a vital skill to encourage and support health behaviour change. This is a skill which can be learned and has been applied to areas such as reducing substance abuse and in the area of chronic illness management.
Health promotion program development involves a process which has five steps: the identification of a health need issue, designing an appropriate program, developing the action plan, implementing the program, and evaluating the outcomes of the program.
How do we know any particular health promotion program works? We have to evaluate the program.
