Analysis on the Poetry “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”

strongest point was providing a voice for the African-American community on his poetry while also effectively providing an experimental change on the literature. One of his most popular was through the poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” where there are the lines:

“I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the

flow of human blood in human veins.” (, p. 4)

The poem provided a historical placement of the Negroes and also shows the way that they have provided for the establishment of civilization, therefore also giving them power and capability; it worked to describe the various places, times, and spaces that the Negroes have established their own community and helped with the sense of history. Here, Hughes managed to make a great impact on the people. This was also emphasized by the use of the first-person thus establishing their equality as a race, and as old as the Caucasians. Rivers are considered to be the bastion of civilization and that all throughout the world the historical events on the start of communities are very likely tied to the rivers. By melding the Negroes and the rivers together and showing the transition of time by establishing places all over the world, Hughes pointed out the contribution that the black community has provided to the world.

As such, the poem also managed to show the equality of the Negro race to others while effectively citing how they have also continued to contribute to the building of history. It speaks volumes on the different ideas that the people have found and also shows their ability to establish a more ideal place in the future. There are several ideas that they haves shown including the call for equality and the right to be acknowledged on their contribution to the building of civilization and historical events in which they also were.

By the final line “My soul has grown deep like the rivers”, thus pointed out that they have placed themselves in the events over time and now have managed to carve a place through history such as rivers have managed to carve their route over the millions of years of forming through rocks, mountains, and soil. These obstructions have managed to help make the river deeper, as such the case with the Negro community, and have also helped with the fertilization of the land and social communication. The ways that they have established their abilities still continues up to today. Indeed, has managed to effectively show the contributions of the Negroes through history and events, both silent and loud, and also show how equal they are with everyone—and perhaps may also offer more.
