THE FEAR OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS – THESIS STATEMENT

Contrary to over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that can be obtained without prescription, prescription drug is licensed medicine that is legislation-regulated. These medicines are given to patient by a doctor for the purpose of treating specific health conditions. On the one hand, these drugs contribute making complex surgeries possible, relieving pain and enabling people to control the symptoms of their medical condition. Nonetheless, these drugs are not harmful if used properly and under doctor’s supervision.

On the other hand, prescriptive drugs are capable of being misused, abused and purports addiction. The fear is now in prescription drugs in the young and the old. Though these prescription drugs are easy to come by, these are just as addictive if not more that illegal drugs, and are killing people. The paradox is that these drugs are legal and lethal.

I fear that the in-take of prescriptive drugs without doctor’s approval and supervision can be extremely dangerous and deadly, especially for teens. Non-medical use of these drugs could lead to serious health problems for both adults and young people. With emphasis given on the latter, I am afraid that the Internet plays a major role in attracting youngsters to attempt to use prescription drugs.

I fear that prescription drugs misused and abused, albeit the differing perspectives, are very dangerous with excessively treacherous consequences. Although there are patient information leaflets in the packaging, there are people who do not follow directions properly either accidentally or purposively. Aside, there are people who intentionally took the drug to get high or for other reasons other than what the drug is intended for.

I also fear that there are OTC drugs readily accessible that threatens and perpetuates the lives of younger people. OTC products such as cough and cold remedies require no doctor’s prescription and are also easily utilizable with quicker effects. As such, I have a much greater fear on the short and long-term effects of these drugs to these people’s health that includes insomnia, delusions and brain and liver damages.
