MEDIA’S INFLUENCE ON TERRORISM
1.0 Background of the Study
Terrorists, governments, and the audience see the function, roles and responsibilities of the media reportage when covering terrorist events from differing and often competing perspectives. Such perspectives drive behavior of terrorists during incidents–often resulting in both tactical and strategic gains to the terrorist operation and the overall terrorist cause. The challenge for both the governmental and press communities is to understand the dynamics of terrorist enterprise and to develop policy options designed to serve the interests of government, the media, and the society (2005).
Media coverage is heightening citizens’ awareness of the terrorism problem, exposing the people to possible danger, but without a direct, imminent threat, and these reports are causing people to significantly panic which changes their daily lives. The media mostly are attracted by extreme terrorist acts not only because it is their duty to report on any major event but also because of the dramatic and spectacular aspect of terrorism that fascinates the general public. People are reluctant in knowing the terrible news but are at the same time enthralled by it. Today’s terrorists exploit this and act in a way which will attract maximum attention around the world. Today’s terrorists have picked up this dynamic and take action not only to make their victims suffer but also to create utmost attention around the world. Terrorists have become “media competent” by knowing and applying the principles of attracting media attention in most of their activities. The media, the terrorists, government and the people all play a crucial role in the war against terrorism.
2.0 Statement of the Problem
The achievement of being aware about the what the media’s influence on the war against terrorism is main issue here The media face a complicated task to strike the right balance between their duty to inform the public and the danger of becoming tools in the hands of terrorists. They maneuver between obstacles to access information imposed and their own understanding of the thin line between the public’s right to know and an efficient fight against terrorism.
What the local government as well as what the local people of a nation is doing in protecting and sustaining it’s people from the ill effects of sensationalized reporting is critical. Sustainable management by the government and the media would be the key in combating the physical and emotional threats to the common people when they are exposed by these man made disasters.
3.0 Objectives of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the several activities or events that jeopardizes effective covering and quality reportage by the media. This research, specifically, purports to determine how these activities affect the common people and to distinguish the role of the people within the vicinity and the authority having jurisdiction in providing the common good for all. This research takes into account the practices that affect on covering an event accurately, recognizing the economic, social and environmental obligation of the people. The study also seeks to evaluate how media coverage can empower the audience to get involved in a national debate and individually alleviate the situation. This research also intends to explore the basic procedures and channels of gathering information made by the media.
4.0 Research Methodology
This study will use the descriptive type of research. A descriptive research intends to present facts concerning the nature and status of a situation, as it exists at the time of the study and to describe present conditions, events or systems based on the impressions or reactions of the respondents of the research (1994). It is also concerned with relationships and practices that exist, beliefs and processes that are ongoing, effects that are being felt, or trends that are developing (1970).
In this study, primary and secondary research will be both incorporated. The reason for this is to be able to provide adequate discussion for the readers that will help them understand more about the issue and the different variables that involve with it. The primary data for the study will be represented by the survey results that will be acquired from the respondents. On the other hand, the literature reviews to be presented in the second chapter of the study will represent the secondary data of the study.
The research will be presented in written form with the addition of data charts which will present the project’s results. Pie charts and network charts will be needed to illustrate some of the analyzed data. This cannot be confirmed, however, until the research data have been analyzed.
