Assessment Task 2: Essay – Developing a Considered Standpoint on Equity and Education


 


Format: Essay (full sentences, in essay style)


 


 


In this assessment you are required to write an essay titled ‘Developing a Considered Standpoint on Equity and Education’ that responds to the theme ‘Diversity, Difference & Cultures – and in relation to one area of education (secondary, primary or early childhood). You are required to draw on Bourdieu’s concept of ‘cultural capital’ in your response.


 


This task asks you to develop a ‘considered standpoint on equity and education’. This is ‘what you stand for as a teacher’ or ‘what you stand for regarding education and equity’ – but asks you to do so in a scholarly way in relation the theme ‘Diversity, Difference & Cultures and to one area of education (early childhood,primary, or secondary).


 


This means you are required to develop a scholarly and considered response to this theme that includes discussion of Bourdieu’s concept of ‘cultural capital’ and that draws on the research literature and perspectives presented in this subject.


 


Your response must demonstrate an engagement with and knowledge of the key issues, debates,


understanding of ‘cultural capital’ and relevant theoretical/philosophical perspectives in relation to education and the key issue of diversity, difference and cultures. To develop a structured and considered response you must draw on the material covered in the lectures, the tutorials, subject textbook, weekly e-readings, and your independent research. In the report you will also need to include an introduction, a conclusion, and a correct and complete reference list.

o Your arguments, claims and ideas must be supported by appropriate references


o These references must be correctly cited in the text of your report


o You need to provide an accurate and complete reference list


o The correct referencing style (the author/date style) is to be used consistently throughout the report, both ‘in text’ and in the reference list.

Demonstrated understanding of ‘cultural capital’ and education


Demonstrated understanding of education and equity and related NSW DET policies


Responded to a specific area of education (early childhood, primary or secondary)


Demonstrated understanding of socio-cultural analysis of the social contexts of education


Evidence of reading, research and use of appropriate referencing (including reference list) to support response


Clear and coherent written style (full sentences and paragraphs)
